David Joseph Toscano (born June 28,1950) is an American politician and lawyer.
A Democrat,he served on the Charlottesville,Virginia city council from 1990 to 2002 and was mayor from 1994 to 1996. [1] In November 2005 he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates,succeeding Mitchell Van Yahres. He represented the 57th district,made up of the city of Charlottesville and part of Albemarle County. [2] [3] Toscano served as House Minority Leader from 2011-2018. [4]
Toscano first won the Democratic nomination for the District 57 House of Delegates seat in 2005. [5]
Toscano only faced a general election opponent three times:in 2005,against Republican,T. W. McCrystal; [6] and in 2009 and 2011 against Independent candidate,Robert Brandon Smith III. [7] [8]
In 2011,Toscano was elected Minority leader in the House of Delegates. [9]
Toscano did not seek reelection in the 2019 election,while facing an already declared challenge in the Democratic Party primary from Sally L. Hudson, [10] who ultimately won the primary and the general election to succeed him in that seat. [11]

The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two houses of the Virginia General Assembly,the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years;unlike most states,these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The House is presided over by the Speaker of the House,who is elected from among the House membership by the Delegates. The Speaker is usually a member of the majority party and,as Speaker,becomes the most powerful member of the House. The House shares legislative power with the Senate,the upper house of the General Assembly. The House of Delegates is the modern-day successor to the colonial House of Burgesses,which first met at Jamestown in 1619. The House is divided into Democratic and Republican caucuses. In addition to the Speaker,there is a majority leader,majority whip,majority caucus chair,minority leader,minority whip,minority caucus chair,and the chairs of the several committees of the House.

Timothy Douglas Hugo is an American businessman,military veteran,and Republican politician in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2003 to 2020,representing the 40th district. Hugo was defeated for re-election in 2019 by Democrat Dan Helmer.

Eileen Robin Filler-Corn is an American lawyer and politician who served as the Minority Leader of the Virginia House of Delegates from January to April 2022,a position she previously held from 2019 to 2020. She previously served as the 56th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2020 to 2022. Since 2010 she has served in the Virginia House of Delegates,representing the 41st district in the Fairfax County suburbs of Washington,D.C. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She is also the first woman and Jew to serve as Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.

After a recount,the result of the election in the 94th district was called a tie. The candidate to hold the seat was determined by random drawing on January 4,2018,which resulted in the Republicans holding a 51–49 majority.

Businessman Glenn Youngkin won the Republican nomination at the party's May 8 convention,which was held in 37 polling locations across the state,and was officially declared the nominee on May 10. The Democratic Party held its primary election on June 8,which former Governor Terry McAuliffe easily won.
The 160th Virginia General Assembly,consisting of members who were elected in both the 2017 House election and 2015 Senate election,convened on January 9,2018. Republicans held one-seat majorities in both chambers,losing 17 seats in the House.
Sally Lindquist Hudson is an economist and state legislator in Virginia. Elected in 2019,she is the first woman to represent the 57th district in the Virginia House of Delegates. She is a member of the Democratic Party. The district includes all of the city of Charlottesville and portions of nearby Albemarle County.
The 2021 Virginia attorney general election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next attorney general of Virginia. Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring attempted to win a third term. Herring initially planned to run for governor,but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day,November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15,2022.
The 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election took place on November 7,2023,concurrently with elections for the Virginia Senate,to elect members of the 163rd Virginia General Assembly. All 100 delegates are elected to two-year terms from single-member districts. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. Democrats gained 3 seats,winning back control with a 51-49 majority after having previously lost it in 2021.
