Virginia's 50th House of Delegates district elects one of the 100 members of the Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. The district is made up of most of Manassas City and some of Prince William County. [1] The representative of the 50th district is Democrat Michelle Maldonado.
Republican Harry J. Parrish, who had previously served as a Manassas council member, was elected to represent District 50 in 1981, which he did continuously for the following 25 years. His health declined in later years but he nevertheless defeated a 2005 primary challenge, and served until his death on March 28, 2006. [2]
In 2006, Republican Jackson Miller was elected to represent the district in a special election to fill the seat following Parrish's death. [3] Miller was reelected four times, generally with about 60% of the vote (with the exception of 2011, when he was unopposed). [4]
In the 2017 Virginia's House of Delegates election, Carter defeated Jackson Miller, the incumbent and Republican majority whip of the House of Delegates, [5] 11,360 to 9,510. [5] 9510 was the largest number of votes Miller had ever received in the district; previously Miller's highest total (always sufficient to retain his seat) was 9,500. [5]
Carter, a first-time candidate, decided to run after difficulties dealing with the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission following an injury on the job. [6] His campaign initially coordinated with the Democratic Party, but ceased reporting internal numbers to the Party following what Carter described as security lapses, and the Party withdrew financial support. [6] During the campaign, Miller sent out mailers comparing Carter to Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong. [5]
In 2019, incumbent Carter fended off a challenge in the Democratic primary by Manassas City Councilman Mark Wolfe. [7] [8] (Wolfe became a Democrat in 2016, having first been elected to the Manassas City Council as a Republican in 2008 and again in 2012). [9] Carter faced Manassas City Councilman Ian Lovejoy, a Republican, in the general election, [8] and won reelection with 53% of the vote. [10]

Jackson Hunter Miller is an American politician. In 2022, he was appointed by Governor Glenn Youngkin as the Director of the Department of Criminal Justice Services. From 2006 to 2018, he served in the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 50th district, made up of the city of Manassas and part of Prince William County in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Republican Party, and was the House majority whip from 2012 to 2018. In the 2017 elections, Miller was defeated by Democratic socialist challenger Lee J. Carter in what was considered an upset.

The 2017 United States elections were held, in large part, on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. This off-year election featured gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as state legislative elections in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature and in the Virginia House of Delegates. Numerous citizen initiatives, mayoral races, and a variety of other local elections also occurred. Special elections were also held for one seat of the U.S. Senate, representing Alabama, and six seats of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Democrats picked up the governorship in New Jersey and the Alabama Senate seat that was up for a special election. The governorship in Virginia and the six House seats that were up for special elections did not change party hands.

Virginia's 42nd House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. Under a redistricting plan effective for the 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election, the district number was reassigned from northern Virginia's Fairfax County to a new southwestern Virginia district formed from parts of the previous districts 12, 7 and 8, including the independent city of Radford, Giles County, and parts of Montgomery and Pulaski counties. The old 12th District included Radford, Giles and different parts of Pulaski and Montgomery counties. Significantly, the new 42nd district no longer includes the Montgomery County town of Blacksburg, which had been home to previous Democrat delegates from the 12th, Joan Munford, Jim Shuler and Chris Hurst.

Lee Jin Carter is an American former politician who represented the 50th district in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2018 to 2022. A member of the Democratic Party, he defeated Jackson Miller, the Republican House Majority Whip, to win the seat. Born in North Carolina, Carter is an IT specialist and a former U.S. Marine. The first openly communist state delegate in the United States since 1929, Carter served on the Finance Committee and the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee. In 2017, he was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of which he was then a member.
Elizabeth Rosalina Guzmán is a Peruvian-American politician and social worker elected to represent Virginia's 31st House of Delegates district in Virginia's House of Delegates. She serves on the House committees on Privileges and Elections and Cities, Counties, and Towns. Guzman was a Democratic candidate for Virginia Lieutenant Governor in 2021. She was an unsuccessful candidate to represent Virginia's 29th Senate district, failing to unseat incumbent Jeremy McPike.

The 2023 Virginia Senate election is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates, to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. These will be the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.
