Virginia Cavalry FC was a planned American professional soccer team based in Ashburn, Virginia. Founded in 2012, the team was expected to make its debut in the North American Soccer League (NASL), the second division of professional soccer in the United States soccer league system, in 2016. [1] [2]
The franchise planned to commence league play upon the completion of a stadium construction project, Edelman Financial Field. [3] [4]
On November 20, 2012, the North American Soccer League announced that a Virginia expansion team would join the league for the 2014 season upon the completion of a new multi-sport stadium project in the One Loudoun development in Ashburn, known as Edelman Financial Field. Loudoun Professional Soccer, LLC (LPS) was named as the ownership group of the club, with former D.C. United goalkeeper and coach Mark Simpson as Director of Soccer Operations. [1] The franchise was owned by VIP Sports & Entertainment, who also owned the proposed Loudoun Hounds minor league baseball team which was planned to share the stadium with the NASL team. [5]
On February 6, 2013, the club announced that their name would be "Virginia Cavalry FC", with a club crest, colors and kit to follow. [6] On April 5, the Cavalry announced its red, black, and silver color scheme and its crest's colors. [7]
On December 6, 2013, the team announced it would push back its entrance to the NASL to the 2015 season due to delays in constructing their stadium. [2]
In early July 2014, it was announced that the team's debut would be pushed to the 2016 season due to reorganization of ownership. [8] In an interview published on August 10, 2015, NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson told the Telegraph that the league had moved on from the franchises in Virginia and Oklahoma City. [9]
Virginia Cavalry unveiled their crest on April 5, 2013. [7] The crest features a checkboard shield with a red field in the lower lefthand and upper righthand panels, with black fields in the opposite panels. In the first panel, the letters "VAC" overlap one another. The next panel over shows a silhouette of a stallion, recalling the club's name. The bottom two panels are covered with a banner showing the club's name, with the letters "FC" beneath the banner. [7]
The Atlanta Silverbacks FC were an American professional soccer club based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1998 as Atlanta Ruckus, the club played in many leagues over the years before folding after the 2015 season. The team played its home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park, a large soccer complex featuring a 5,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in Atlanta, 15 miles northeast of downtown. The team's colors were red, black, grey, and white.

Minnesota United FC was a lower-tier American professional soccer team based in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area in Minnesota. Founded in 2010 as NSC Minnesota and later known as Minnesota Stars FC, the team played in the North American Soccer League (NASL), a professional league sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation. The team won the 2011 NASL championship. On March 25, 2015, Major League Soccer announced it had awarded an expansion franchise to the Twin Cities and McGuire's ownership group to begin play in 2017. FC Edmonton was a Canadian professional soccer club based in Edmonton, Alberta. The club was founded in 2010 and competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 2011 to 2017 and then going on hiatus in 2018 when the NASL ceased competitive operations and cancelled the 2018 season. They returned in 2019 to compete in the Canadian Premier League from the league's inaugural season in 2019 until 2022, when it was dissolved by the league. From 2012 onward, FC Edmonton's home field had been Clarke Stadium.
The Loudoun Hounds were a planned minor league baseball team based in Ashburn, Virginia. They were first anticipated to begin play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an independent baseball league, upon completion of their stadium, Edelman Financial Field. The organization was established in 2010, but due to funding issues they ruled out fielding a team for the 2014 season. Their offices were closed and their phones disconnected in September 2014. A lawsuit filed against them that month sought to end their stadium site lease. The suit was settled in February 2016 with the lease being terminated.

One Loudoun is a census-designated place (CDP) in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. It is a mixed-use development just south of Virginia State Route 7, 29 miles (47 km) northwest of Washington, D.C., and 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Leesburg.
