The Virginia Outdoors Foundation is a quasi-state agency formed by the Virginia General Assembly in 1966 "to promote the preservation of open space lands and to encourage private gifts of money, securities, land or other property to preserve the natural, scenic, historic, open-space and recreational areas of the Commonwealth." As of 2017, it owns 3,366 acres (13.62 km2) of public land [1] and holds and manages conservation easements on approximately 801,077 acres (1,251.68 sq mi; 3,241.84 km2) of private land. [2]

Members of the Virginia Outdoors Foundation's Board of Trustees are appointed by the Virginia governor for four-year staggered terms. The sitting governor appoints a chairman from among the seven trustees. [3]

Among the properties that the Virginia Outdoors Foundation currently protects through conservation easements are Carvins Cove Natural Reserve [4] and Mill Mountain [5] owned by the City of Roanoke, Wildwood Park [6] in the City of Radford, Shirley Plantation [7] in Charles City County, James Madison's Montpelier [8] in Orange County, the Hermitage Museum and Gardens [9] in the City of Norfolk, and more than 4,000 acres (16 km2) of land along the Rappahannock River owned by the City of Fredericksburg. [10] In cooperation with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the Virginia Outdoors Foundation also helps manage the 4,996-acre (20.22 km2) Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area, established via easement on land owned by Appalachian Power along Smith Mountain Lake. As of 2008, twenty percent of the land in Clarke County, Virginia was covered by conservation easements. [12]

The American Battlefield Trust is a charitable organization whose primary focus is in the preservation of battlefields of the American Civil War, the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 through acquisition of battlefield land. The American Battlefield Trust was formerly known as the Civil War Trust. On May 8, 2018, the organization announced the creation of the American Battlefield Trust as the umbrella organization for two divisions, the Civil War Trust and the Revolutionary War Trust, which was formerly known as "Campaign 1776." The name American Battlefield Trust reflects the organization's expanded mission, announced in 2014, of saving land at battlefields of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 as well as the American Civil War The American Battlefield Trust also promotes educational programs and heritage tourism initiatives to inform the public about these three conflicts and their significance in American history. On May 31, 2018, the Trust announced that with the acquisition of 13 acres at the Cedar Creek battlefield in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, it had reached the milestone of 50,000 acres of battlefield land acquired and preserved. Since 1988, the Trust and its federal, state and local partners have preserved land in 24 states at more than 130 battlefields of the Civil War, the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. More than 10,000 of the acres have been acquired and preserved since 2014.

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is a 12,700-acre (51 km2) city park in Botetourt and Roanoke counties, Virginia. Managed by the Western Virginia Water Authority and the City of Roanoke, it is the fifth-largest city park in the United States, and the second-largest city park managed by a municipality. Within the park's boundary is Carvins Cove Reservoir and also the main ridgeline of Brushy Mountain, which rises about 1200 feet above the lake's waterline.

Bourassa State Forest is a 288-acre (117 ha) state forest located in Bedford County, Virginia, north of Smith Mountain Lake. It is used primarily for timber production, as an outdoor lab, and as a wildlife sanctuary. The forest is adjacent to the Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area.

Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve

Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve is a 2,486-acre (10.06 km2) Natural Area Preserve located along the Bull Run Mountains in Fauquier and Prince William counties, Virginia. Dedicated in 2002, the majority of the preserve is owned and operated by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF). It harbors a number of outstanding natural community types, some of which are rare in the Commonwealth. There are also quartzite cliffs and boulder fields around High Point Mountain within the preserve's boundaries.

Camp Branch Wetlands Natural Area Preserve

Camp Branch Wetlands Natural Area Preserve is an 80-acre (32 ha) Natural Area Preserve located in Floyd County, Virginia. Privately owned, it was officially dedicated in 2007, and is part of a larger private holding of 188 acres (76 ha) protected by a conservation easement held by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. The preserve is closed to the public.

Redrock Mountain Natural Area Preserve

Redrock Mountain Natural Area Preserve is a 640-acre (260 ha) Natural Area Preserve located in Smyth County, Virginia. The preserve is named for the 4,413-foot (1,345 m) Redrock Mountain, which itself is named for its red siltstone cliffs. It supports a number of rare natural features, and two natural community types, including examples of "mountain/piedmont basic woodlands" upon the mountain's slopes, and "rich cove/slope forests" in the preserve's lowlands. Five rare plant species are found on the property, including spring blue-eyed Mary, fringed scorpion-weed, and Carey saxifrage.

The Blue Ridge Land Conservancy (BRLC), formerly known as the Western Virginia Land Trust (WVLT), is a non-profit land trust and conservation organization headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia that seeks to preserve the wilderness and farmlands in the western portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia from excessive commercial development. BRLC's service area contains ten counties: Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Montgomery, and Roanoke.

The Roanoke Region is the area of the Commonwealth of Virginia surrounding the city of Roanoke. Its usage may refer to the metropolitan statistical area or the Roanoke Valley, but it sometimes includes areas in the Allegheny Mountains and New River Valley which includes Alleghany County, Montgomery County, Covington, Clifton Forge, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford. Bedford County and Floyd County are sometimes included as part of the region.

Botetourt Springs, Virginia Former settlement and resort in Virginia, United States

Botetourt Springs is a mineral spring and was a historical settlement on the border of Roanoke County, Virginia and Botetourt County, Virginia, United States. The spring is located 12 mi (19 km) from Fincastle. Botetourt Springs was originally settled in the mid-18th century, growing as a mineral spring resort during the summer, especially after the 1820s.

Monterey (Roanoke, Virginia) United States historic place

Monterey is a historic plantation house located at Roanoke, Virginia. It was built about 1845, and is a two-story, banked, Greek Revival style brick dwelling with a spreading hipped roof. Two additions were made to the original house after 1871, which gives it an "L"-shape. The front facade features a full-width verandah style porch and the rear has a two-story gallery. Also on the property is a contributing smoke house.

The Land Trust for Tennessee is an American non-profit conservation organization working to protect Tennessee's natural, scenic and historic landscapes and sites. Since 1999, The Land Trust has partnered to conserve more than 119,000 acres (480 km2) of land across 65-plus Tennessee counties.

Short Hills Wildlife Management Area

Short Hills Wildlife Management Area is a 4,232-acre (17.13 km2) Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Rockbridge and Botetourt counties, Virginia. It covers approximately 10 miles (16 km) of ridgeline along the Short Hills range.

Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area

Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area is a 4,996-acre (20.22 km2) Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Bedford and Pittsylvania counties, Virginia. Located on the shores of Smith Mountain Lake, the WMA is owned by Appalachian Power and cooperatively managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation through a conservation easement that permits public access.
