Viva was Xmal Deutschland's third album, released in 1987. "Matador" was produced by the Stranglers's Hugh Cornwell and was released as a single in the UK in 1986.

Matador is the title of a 1991 musical by Mike Leander and Eddie Seago, with a book by Peter Jukes, which tells the story of the rise and fall of a fictional matador, loosely based on Manuel Benitez, El Cordobes. The show featured stunning choreography in traditional Flamenco style by Rafael Aguilar, and the show won an Olivier Award as a result. Several dancers were cast directly from Spain, making their West End debuts. The bulls for the fighting sequences were performed by a phalanx of black-clad dancers, moving as one.

Xmal Deutschland, often written as X-Mal Deutschland, was a musical group from Hamburg, West Germany, which existed from 1980 to 1990. Founded in 1980 with a completely female line-up, they became chart hit makers both within, and outside, their native country. The lead singer of the band was vocalist Anja Huwe. Xmal Deutschland's last album was released in 1989.

After moving back to her hometown of Birmingham, Taylor was unable to write for nearly a year, eventually composing the entire album over two weeks during a break in touring with Azure Ray. This release marks the first time Taylor produced her own album. Overlook was engineered by Birmingham musician Les Nuby, who also played drums and guitar, and also features her brother Macey Taylor of Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band on bass, banjo, organ and keyboards and Browan Lollar of St. Paul and The Broken Bones on guitar.
