The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is an American nonprofit human rights organization founded in 1920. The organization strives "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States". The ACLU works through litigation and lobbying and has over 1,800,000 members as of July 2018,with an annual budget of over $300 million. Affiliates of the ACLU are active in all 50 states,Washington,D.C.,and Puerto Rico. The ACLU provides legal assistance in cases where it considers civil liberties at risk. Legal support from the ACLU can take the form of direct legal representation or preparation of amicus curiae briefs expressing legal arguments when another law firm is already providing representation.
Paula Corbin Jones is an American civil servant. A former Arkansas state employee,Jones sued United States President Bill Clinton for sexual harassment in 1994. In the initial lawsuit,Jones cited Clinton for sexual harassment at the Excelsior Hotel in Little Rock,Arkansas on May 8,1991. Following a series of civil suits and appeals through the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals from May 1994 to January 1996,Clinton v. Jones eventually reached the United States Supreme Court on May 27,1997. The case was later settled on November 13,1998.
Deborah Ross is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the U.S. representative for North Carolina's 2nd congressional district since 2021. Her district is based in Raleigh. A member of the Democratic Party,Ross served as a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 2003 to 2013,representing the state's 38th and then 34th House district,including much of northern Raleigh and surrounding suburbs in Wake County.
"Driving while black" (DWB) is a sardonic description of racial profiling of African-American motor vehicle drivers. On March 24,1998,a school shooting occurred at Westside Middle School in unincorporated Craighead County,Arkansas near the city of Jonesboro. Perpetrators Mitchell Johnson,13,and Andrew Golden,11,fatally shot four students and a teacher with multiple weapons,and both were arrested when they attempted to flee the scene. Ten others were wounded. Golden and Johnson were convicted of five murders and ten assaults,and were imprisoned until each turned 21 years of age. After the 1992 Lindhurst High School shooting that killed four people in Olivehurst,California,the massacre was the deadliest non-college school shooting in contemporary U.S. history until the April 1999 Columbine High School massacre. As of 2024,it is currently the deadliest middle school shooting in U.S. history. It is also one of the two deadliest mass shootings in Arkansas history,the other being the Pearcy murders,which also resulted in the deaths of five people.

After her 12-year-old daughter,Andria Brewer,was murdered in 1999,she became an advocate for victims of violent crime. She is also a former Republican member of the Arkansas House of Representatives from the 94th district. The district she represented encompasses a part of Benton County in the northwest Arkansas,her adopted state.

Shelia R. Stubbs is an American politician,pastor,and former probation and parole agent. She is a Democratic member of the Wisconsin State Assembly,elected in 2018,representing the south and west parts of Madison,Wisconsin. She is also a member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors since 2006 and she is Dane County's first African American representative in the Wisconsin Legislature. From 2006 to 2020,Stubbs was the only African American to serve on the Board of Supervisors,however African American representation on the Board is increasing. Beginning in 2020,the Dane County Board of Supervisors installed four other African American supervisors in Anthony Gray,Teran Peterson,April Kigeya,and Dana Pellebon.
