History

After Haeberli's death, Jakob Vontobel takes over the brokerage firm and establishes the limited partnership J. Vontobel & Co.
Jakob Vontobel's son, Hans Vontobel, joins the bank and, in 1951, is made a partner with unlimited liability. In 1972, Jakob Vontobel's grandson, Hans-Dieter Vontobel, joins the bank and is made a partner with unlimited liability in 1977.
Vontobel expanded into the USA and founded Vontobel USA Inc. Other locations abroad followed later.
Raiffeisen acquires a 12.5% stake in Vontobel Holding AG. The Vontobel family and the Vontobel Foundation continue to hold the majority of the company's share capital.
In May 2009, Bank Vontobel Europe AG, which is headquartered in Munich and is a 100% subsidiary of the Vontobel Group, commences operations in Germany after being granted a full banking license. In July 2009, the Vontobel Group acquires 100% of Commerzbank (Schweiz) AG, which is headquartered in Zurich and has a branch in Geneva and a subsidiary in Vienna. The integration of Commerzbank (Schweiz) results in a 20% increase in the volume of client assets held by the Vontobel Group's Private Banking business.
Branches of Bank Vontobel AG open in Basel and Berne. Vontobel Swiss Wealth Advisors AG is founded in Zurich.
Vontobel Financial Products (Asia Pacific) Pte. Ltd. is founded in Singapore and Vontobel Wealth Management (Hong Kong) Ltd. is founded in Hong Kong.
Vontobel acquired a majority stake in TwentyFour Asset Management LLP in London, completed in 2021 [6] , when Vontobel acquired the remaining 40%. In the same year Bank Finter was purchased, this was followed in 2018 by the takeover of Notenstein La Roche from Raiffeisen Switzerland [7] and in 2022 by the acquisition of the UBS Swiss Financial Advisers [8] . The acquisition of a significant minority stake in the private infrastructure manager Ancala Partners [9] LLP, London, marks a milestone in delivering on the firm’s strategy to enter private markets.

Rendu de Lindt and Schubiger succeed Dr. Z. Staub in the CEO position, while ongoing restructuring is extended. Operational savings impact unprofitable activities, and target is to re-focus to core activities [10] .

Shareholder structure

The majority of the share capital is held by the Vontobel family and the Vontobel Foundation in the form of a pooling agreement [11] . Two fourth-generation family members are represented on the Vontobel Board of Directors. [12]

Banking in Switzerland dates to the early 18th century through Switzerland's merchant trade and has, over the centuries, grown into a complex, regulated, and international industry. Banking is seen as emblematic of Switzerland. The country has a long history of banking secrecy and client confidentiality reaching back to the early 1700s. Starting as a way to protect wealthy European banking interests, Swiss banking secrecy was codified in 1934 with the passage of a landmark federal law, the Federal Act on Banks and Savings Banks. These laws, which were used to protect assets of persons being persecuted by Nazi authorities, have also been used by people and institutions seeking to illegally evade taxes, hide assets, or generally commit financial crime.
