The University of Puerto Rico is the main public university system in the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It is a government-owned corporation with 11 campuses and approximately 44,200 students and approximately 4,450 faculty members. UPR has the largest and most diverse academic offerings in the commonwealth,with 472 academic programs of which 32 lead to a doctorate.

The University of Puerto Rico,Mayagüez Campus (UPRM) or Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) in Spanish,is a public land-grant university in Mayagüez,Puerto Rico. UPRM is the second-largest university campus of the University of Puerto Rico system. In addition to its status as a land-grant university,it is also a member of the sea-grant and space-grant research consortia. In 2009,the campus population was composed of 12,108 students,1,924 regular staff members,and 1,037 members of the education staff. In 2013,the student population remained relatively steady at 11,838,but the instructional faculty dropped to 684. In the second semester of 2019 around 12,166 students were enrolled. By the end of the academic year 2022-2023 there were 10,071 students enrolled. UPRM has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) since 1946.

The term is mostly used in reference to those that support a compact of free association or a variation of this formula,commonly known as Estado Libre Asociado (ELA) Soberano,between Puerto Rico and the United States. Members of the independence movement that are willing to pursue alliances with this ideology are occasionally referred to as such,but are mostly known as independentistas. Consequently,soberanismo then became the local name for the free association movement.
Ana Irma Rivera Lassén is an Afro-Puerto Rican attorney who is a current Member of the Puerto Rican Senate,elected on November 3,2020,and who previously served as the head of the Bar Association of Puerto Rico from 2012–2014. She was the first black woman,and third female,to head the organization. She is a feminist and human rights activist,who is also openly lesbian. She has received many awards and honors for her work in the area of women's rights and human rights,including the Capetillo-RoquéMedal from the Puerto Rican Senate,the Martin Luther King/Arturo Alfonso Schomburg Prize,and the Nilita Vientós Gastón Medal. She is a practicing attorney and serves on the faculty of several universities in Puerto Rico;she currently serves on the Advisory Committee on Access to Justice of the Puerto Rican Judicial Branch.
Alexandra Lúgaro Aponte is a Puerto Rican attorney,businesswoman,and politician who was a candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico during the 2016 and 2020 elections,finishing in third place both times. In 2016,running as an independent,Lúgaro obtained a total of 175,831 votes (11.13%). In 2020,Lúgaro ran as the candidate of the Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana.

The 2024 Puerto Rico gubernatorial election will be held on November 5,2024,to elect the governor of Puerto Rico,concurrently with the election of the Resident Commissioner,the Senate,the House of Representatives,and the mayors of the 78 municipalities. Incumbent New Progressive Party Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia is running for re-election to a second term in office.
The government of Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia was formed in the weeks following the 2020 Puerto Rico gubernatorial election as he released a list of nominees for most of the positions before his swearing in on 2 January 2021. His New Progressive Party (PNP) not having a majority in either chamber of the 19th Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico meant that he would have to further negotiate the approval of his nominees with the opposition parties that hold control of the legislature.
