Walton James "Walt" McLeod III,(born June 30,1937),is a former Democratic member of the South Carolina House of Representatives,representing the 40th District from 1996 until 2017. McLeod,a businessman and attorney,earned his B.A. from Yale University in 1959 and his L.L.B. from the University of South Carolina in 1964. [1] While at the University of South Carolina,he was president of the Clariosophic Society.
In 1964,he served as a law clerk to Judge Clement Haynsworth of the United States 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. From 1967 to 1968 McLeod was an assistant United States Attorney. He served as General Counsel for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control,1968-1994. He was also the Deputy South Carolina Attorney General from 1987 to 1988. [1]
McLeod is married to Julie E. Hamiter,with one child. He is also a veteran of the United States Navy which he served from 1959 to 1961 as well as 1963. He also attained the rank of captain in the United States Navy Reserve. [1]
In 2016,after serving 21 years in office,he decided to retire from politics. Rick Martin,a Republican,defeated Carlton Kinard,a Democrat,to win McLeod's seat.

The Clariosophic Society,also known as ΜΣΦ,is a literary society founded in 1806 at the University of South Carolina,then known as South Carolina College,as a result of the splitting in two of the Philomathic Society,which had been formed within weeks of the opening of the college in 1805 and included virtually all students. At what was called the Synapian Convention held in February 1806,the members of Philomathic voted to split into two separate societies,one of which became known as Clariosophic,while the other society became known as Euphradian. Two blood brothers picked the members for the new groups in a manner similar to choosing sides for an impromptu baseball game. John Goodwin became the first president of Clariosophic. Other early presidents include Stephen Elliott,Hugh S. Legaré. George McDuffie and Richard I. Manning. The Society was reactivated in 2013.

Malcolm Buie Seawell was an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Democratic Party,he served as North Carolina Attorney General from 1958 to 1960. Seawell was raised in Lee County,North Carolina. After law school,he moved to Lumberton and joined a law firm. From 1942 to 1945 he worked for the U.S. Department of War in Washington,D.C. He then returned to Lumberton and successfully ran for the office of mayor in 1947. He held the post until the following year when he was appointed 9th Solicitorial District Solicitor. While working as solicitor Seawell gained state-wide prominence for his aggressive efforts to prosecute the Ku Klux Klan (KKK),and was credited for ultimately pushing the organization out of Robeson County. Governor Luther H. Hodges later made him a judge before appointing him Attorney General of North Carolina in 1958 to fill a vacancy.
