Wan Thamrin Hasyim (born 27 December 1944) is an Indonesian politician who served as the governor of Riau between December 2018 and February 2019. Previously,he served as Vice Governor between 2017 and 2018,and was the first regent of Rokan Hilir Regency between 2001 and 2006.
Hasyim was born in Bagansiapiapi,today in Rokan Hilir Regency,on 27 December 1944. He completed his basic education in North Sumatra. [1]
In 1974,Hasyim became a civil servant for the Riau provincial government. He was promoted to head of the revenue office in the Riau Islands in 1983,which he served until 1997 when he was promoted to head of the economic bureau for the governor's office. In 1998,he became head of the mining bureau for the province,until June 2000 when he was appointed acting regent of Rokan Hilir Regency. He was later elected by the municipal council to serve as regent between 7 June 2001 and 2006. [1] He did not take part in the 2006 election for the regency. [2] After his tenure as regent,he was the chairman of the Raja Ali Haji Foundation,which operated the Lancang Kuning University in Riau. [3]
Hasyim was elected by Riau's provincial legislature on 25 April 2017 as the vice gubernatorial replacement due to the vacancy created by the conviction of Annas Maamun for corruption and the elevation of his deputy Arsyadjuliandi Rachman in his place. [4] He was sworn in on 12 May 2017. [1] On 24 September 2018,with Rachman resigning as governor,Hasyim was appointed as acting governor of Riau, [5] and was appointed as full governor on 10 December 2018. [6] His term expired on 19 February 2019. [7]
Riau is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the central eastern coast of Sumatra along the Strait of Malacca. The province shares land borders with North Sumatra to the northwest,West Sumatra to the west,and Jambi to the south,and a maritime border with the Riau Islands and the country of Malaysia to the east. It is the second-largest province in the island of Sumatra after South Sumatra,and is slightly larger than Jordan. According to the 2020 census,Riau had a population of 6,394,087 across a land area of 89,935.90 square kilometres;the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 6,614,384. The province comprises ten regencies and two cities,with Pekanbaru serving as the capital and largest city.
Rokan Hilir is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province,on Sumatra island,Indonesia. It was formed on 4 October 1999 from districts which had previously been the northwestern part of Bengkalis Regency. It occupies the lower part of the catchment area of the Rokan River,and has an area of 8,851.59 km2. It had a population of 553,216 at the 2010 census and 637,161 at the 2020 census;the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 638,407. The administrative centre of the Rokan Hilir Regency is located at the town of Bagansiapiapi.

After his release in 2020,he was once more arrested for a bribery case from his time as governor,and sentenced to another year in prison in 2022.
Rusli Zainal is an Indonesian former politician convicted of corruption who served two terms as Governor of Riau between 2003 and 2013. He was also previously regent of Indragiri Hilir Regency. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2014,later reduced to 10 years,and was released on parole in 2022.
Saleh Djasit is an Indonesian politician and military officer who served as the governor of Riau between 1998 and 2003,and as a member of the People's Representative Council from 1997 to 1998 and 2004 to 2008. He was also regent of Kampar Regency between 1986 and 1996. He was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison in 2008 for a corruption case,although he was released on parole after 2.5 years.
Wan Abubakar is an Indonesian politician who was a member of the People's Representative Council between 2009 and 2014. He also briefly served as governor of Riau in 2008. He served as the vice governor to Rusli Zainal since 2003,and when Zainal resigned in July 2008,Abubakar was elevated to governor for the rest of his term.
