Wanderers Football Club also known as Wanderers is a former soccer club based in Parramatta, Australia. Founded in 1880, the club is considered to be the first soccer club in Australia.

History

The club was founded on 3 August 1880, by English-emigrate John Walter Fletcher, after he called a meeting at Aarons Hotel, Sydney, to promote the English game of soccer to the new colony. [1]

Wanderers played their first match on 14 August 1880, against the Kings School rugby team. [2] [3] Wanderers won 5–0 in front of a crowd of 1,000 at Parramatta Common. The match is considered to be the first played under the Laws of the Game in Australia. [4]

Colours and crest

Wanderers wore a white jersey, cap, knickerbockers and blue stockings, with a Southern Cross badge over the left breast.

The club played games at both Parramatta Common and Moore Park. [5]

Western Sydney Stadium, commercially known as CommBank Stadium, is a multi-purpose rectangular stadium located in Parramatta, within Greater Western Sydney region, approximately 24 km (15 mi) west of Sydney City Centre. It replaced the demolished Parramatta Stadium. The stadium opened in April 2019. It has a 30,000 seat capacity. The stadium is owned by the NSW Government, operated by VenuesLive, designed by Populous Architects and built by Lendlease with a build cost of $300 million. The stadium hosts games across the major rectangular field sports in Sydney.

Sunshine Coast Football is the governing body of football (soccer) on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. It is a member zone of Football Queensland and Football Federation Australia. The North Coast Soccer Association was formed in 1968. Teams from Caloundra and Woombye were soon formed, joined later that year by Maroochydore and Beerwah. Dan Munro (1922-2011) also known as Dave Munro was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s. He played for St George and Parramatta as a winger. Munro was a foundation player for Parramatta and played in the club's first ever game.

The 1887 Southern Rugby Football Union season was the 14th season of the Sydney Rugby Premiership. This was the fifth competition for the Gardiner Challenge Cup which was awarded to the winners of the premiership. The football season was from May till August 1887. The season culminated in the premiership, which was won by Sydney University who were crowned premiers after winning the first ever final against Arfoma.

The 1909 Victorian soccer season was the first competitive season of soccer in the Australian state of Victoria, under association with the governing body of Football Victoria. The season consisted of one league made up of six 'district' teams from Melbourne that was known as the 'Amateur League'. This league season is recognized as being the first season of first tier Victorian state soccer that is now formally recognized as the National Premier Leagues Victoria, in which Carlton United were crowned as the inaugural premiers. The calendar season also saw the commencement of the Dockerty Cup, in which Carlton United defeated St Kilda 2–1, making United first club in the state's history to achieve both respective accolades in the same season.

Wilfred Bratton was a former Australian soccer player who also played as a forward for the inaugural Australia national soccer team in 1922.
