Warren is a British sitcom, which aired on BBC One between February and April 2019. The series stars Martin Clunes, Lisa Millett, Tim Preston and Oscar Morgan in the main roles. It was written by Jimmy Donny Cosgrove and Paul McKenna. The BBC did not commission any further series after the first. [1]

Synopsis

The sitcom shows the life of the angry, impatient, selfish and abrasive driving instructor Warren Thompson (Martin Clunes), after moving in with his partner Anne Humphries (Lisa Millett) and her two teenage sons Charlie (Tim Preston) and Danny (Oscar Morgan) in Preston, after her father, Bill (David Hargreaves) falls ill. But when rumours go around he ran over a cat, his public image worsens.

Meanwhile, Charlie's got a girlfriend named Priya, but unknowingly goes to the same place Anne and Liz are.

Meanwhile, Warren gets a new chicken named Maude and attempts to annoy Ian, who is scared of chickens.

After Anne's father Bill is given the all clear on an unknown health problem, she and Warren join Bill and Sheila on a holiday to Sunny Groves in Morecambe. But when Warren discovers that they have a bronze-range caravan after a mix up, he attempts to gain the said golden deluxe caravan from fellow camper Matthew Thompson by saying that Bill has only a week to live. Back in Preston, Charlie throws a house party, but when Danny invites Ian and Paula, he jinxes it when only Ian, Paula and Jenny arrive.

A funeral is being held for Bill's sister Faye. Warren is using the family's eight-seater to transport himself with the rest of the family: Anne, Charlie, Danny, Bill, Sheila, Liz and Colin. But when the van breaks down, the family are stuck on a motorway; to make matters worse: Bill has a urine infection and Warren's impatience cause the car mechanic to leave. Meanwhile, Danny is worried about his relationship with Jenny as she is not texting him.

Reception

Warren received mixed reviews, with some viewers calling it "uncomfortable", [10] while The Telegraph called it "the final nail in the coffin for British sitcom". [11]

Clunes has narrated a number of documentaries for ITV, the first of which was Islands of Britain in 2009. He has since presented a number of documentaries centred on animals. He has also voiced Kipper the Dog in the animated series Kipper.

Pauline Perpetua Sheen is an English actress. She began her career with roles on various television series, before fronting her own comedy sketch show, Pauline's Quirkes, in 1976. She later starred as Vicky Smith on the BBC drama series Angels (1982–1983), and achieved fame with her portrayal of Sharon Theodopolopodous on the long-running sitcom Birds of a Feather, for which she won a British Comedy Award and was nominated on three occasions for a National Television Award. All at Sea is a British children's television sitcom set in a bed and breakfast. The series began airing on CBBC in 2013. It stars Nicola Stephenson, Steve Edge, Ryan Wilkinson, Olivia Cosgrove and Sam Hattersley amongst others. It is filmed on location in Scarborough and various locations around South Manchester and at studios in Manchester. The house filmed is located in Bowdon, Altricham. A second series began airing in September 2014. The series was nominated for the 2014 Kids' BAFTA awards for Best Comedy. It was nominated again in 2015 for the same award. "Santa" was the final episode. Repeats of the show began airing on 1 May 2019 at 17:00 on the CBBC Channel.

<i>Upstart Crow</i> British television sitcom

Upstart Crow is a British sitcom based on the life of William Shakespeare written by Ben Elton. The show premiered on 9 May 2016 on BBC Two as part of the commemorations of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. Its title quotes "an upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers", a critique of Shakespeare by his rival Robert Greene in the latter's Groats-Worth of Wit.

<i>Ghosts</i> (2019 British TV series) British television series

Ghosts is a British sitcom first broadcast on BBC One in April 2019. It follows a group of ghosts from different historical periods haunting a country house while sharing it with its new living occupants. It is written and performed by the collective group Them There, who had previously worked together on productions including Horrible Histories and Yonderland. The show also airs on Paramount+ and also on CBC Gem in Canada and was previously available on HBO Max in the US. CBS began airing an American adaptation of the series in 2021, and in November 2023 also began airing episodes of the British version under the title Ghosts UK.

Jimmy Donny Cosgrove is a writer, actor and comedian from Andover, Hampshire. He is known for co-writing the BBC 1 sitcom Warren starring Martin Clunes.
