Brenda Villa is an accomplished American water polo player. She is the most decorated athlete in the world of women’s water polo. Villa was named Female Water Polo Player of the Decade for 2000-2009 by the FINA Aquatics World Magazine. She is one of four female players who competed in water polo at four Olympics; and one of two female athletes who won four Olympic medals in water polo. She is a leading goalscorer in Olympic water polo history, with 31 goals. In 2018, she was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

The 2007 Pan American Games, officially known as the XV Pan American Games, were a major continental multi-sport event that took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 13 to 29, 2007. A total of 5,633 athletes from 42 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 332 events in 34 sports and in 47 disciplines. During the Games, 95 new Pan American records were set; 2,196 medals were awarded; 1,262 doping control tests were performed and about 15,000 volunteers participated in the organization of the event, which was an Olympic qualification for 13 International Federations (IFs).
Elizabeth Anne "Betsey" Armstrong is an American water polo goalkeeper, who won gold medals with the United States women's national water polo team at the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games, and 2007 and 2009 world championships. She is a leading goalkeeper in Olympic water polo history, with 102 saves. Armstrong attended Huron High School in Ann Arbor and was a three-year letterwinner on her water polo team. She then went on to graduate from the University of Michigan in 2005, where she was the goalkeeper for the women's water polo team. Betsey graduated with a bachelor's degree in English language and Literature. She is currently the record holder at University of Michigan with 350 saves.

The Scotiabank Aquatics Center is an aquatics center built for the 2011 Pan American Games in the municipality of Zapopan, near Guadalajara, Mexico. It was opened June 22, 2011, built at a cost of $USD31.7m. It is the most modern aquatic complex of its kind in Latin America, and considered to be the second best in the world by the Fédération Internationale de Natation. It has a permanent capacity 3,593, but will have a capacity of 5,000 spectators for the Pan American Games.

Anton Ludwig "Tony" van Dorp was a Dutch-American water polo goalkeeper. He was born in Batavia, Dutch East Indies, to Dutch parents and played in the Netherlands and for the Dutch national team until 1963. However, since 1957 he lived most of the time in the United States and had the US citizenship. Thus he competed in the 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics for the United States. He then played for the club Phillips 66, Long Beach, and became AAU All-American in 1964-68. In 1967, his team won the Pan American Games where he stopped 50% of penalty shots and was named the outstanding goalkeeper of the tournament. Beside water polo, he served for 21 years as an air traffic controller with the US Air Force in the US, Germany, and Vietnam.
Adhemar Grijó Filho was a Brazilian sportsman. He competed in three Olympics. He represented Brazil in swimming at the 1952 Olympics and in water polo at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics.

Water polo competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto was held from July 7 to 15 at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Markham. The water polo competitions was the first sporting event to be conducted at the games, beginning three days before the opening ceremony. This is because the Pan American Games were scheduled to be held roughly around the same time as the 2015 World Aquatics Championships scheduled for Kazan, Russia, thus the competition was moved forward to allow for a sufficient gap between the two events. A total of eight men's and women's teams competed in each respective tournament.
The water polo Competitions at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games took place at the Leyes de Reforma Aquatics Centre in Veracruz, Mexico from November 22 to 29. There were two competitions, one each for men and women, seven national teams competed in the men's tournament, while five contested the women's event. The top 3 teams in each tournament qualifies to compete at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

The venue for the competition is the Water polo pool located at the Villa María del Triunfo cluster. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams competed in each tournament. This means a total of 176 athletes are scheduled to compete.
