Horace Upham was a prominent Milwaukee-based lawyer and the son of Don A. J. Upham, a member of the legislature of the Wisconsin Territory and Mayor of Milwaukee. Horace and his wife, Catherine, had the house built as their summer home. In 1938, the Uphams donated the property to Wisconsin Easter Seals, which now uses it as Camp Wawbeek, for children with disabilities. [3] [4]
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and on the State Register of Historic Places in 1989. [5]
Wisconsin Dells is a city in south-central Wisconsin, with a population of 2,678 people as of the 2010 census. It straddles four counties: Adams, Columbia, Juneau, and Sauk. The city takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a scenic, glacially formed gorge that features striking sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River. Together with the nearby village of Lake Delton, the city forms an area known as "The Dells", a popular Midwestern tourist destination.

Don Alonzo Joshua Upham was an American lawyer and politician. He served as the 4th Mayor of Milwaukee and was the Democratic candidate for Governor of Wisconsin in the 1851 election. He also served as President of the first Wisconsin Constitutional Convention and United States Attorney for the Wisconsin. He was sometimes referred to as "D. A. J. Upham" in historical documents.
Alexander Chadbourne Eschweiler was an American architect with a practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He designed both residences and commercial structures. His eye-catching Japonist pagoda design for filling stations for Wadham's Oil and Grease Company of Milwaukee were repeated over a hundred times, though only a very few survive. His substantial turn-of-the-20th-century residences for the Milwaukee business elite, in conservative Jacobethan or neo-Georgian idioms, have preserved their cachet in the city.
