Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin City in Wisconsin, United States

Wisconsin Dells is a city in south-central Wisconsin, with a population of 2,678 people as of the 2010 census. It straddles four counties: Adams, Columbia, Juneau, and Sauk. The city takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a scenic, glacially formed gorge that features striking sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River. Together with the nearby village of Lake Delton, the city forms an area known as "the Dells", a popular Midwestern tourist destination.

History

Horace Upham was a prominent Milwaukee-based lawyer and the son of Don A. J. Upham, a member of the legislature of the Wisconsin Territory and Mayor of Milwaukee. Horace and his wife, Catherine, had the house built as their summer home. In 1938, the Uphams donated the property to Wisconsin Easter Seals, which now uses it as Camp Wawbeek, for children with disabilities. [3] [4]

Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin and the fifth-largest city in the Midwestern United States. The seat of the eponymous county, it is on Lake Michigan's western shore. Ranked by its estimated 2014 population, Milwaukee was the 31st largest city in the United States. The city's estimated population in 2017 was 595,351. Milwaukee is the main cultural and economic center of the Milwaukee metropolitan area which had a population of 2,043,904 in the 2014 census estimate. It is the third-most densely populated metropolitan area in the Midwest, surpassed only by Chicago and Detroit, respectively. Milwaukee is considered a Gamma global city as categorized by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network with a regional GDP of over $105 billion.

Don A. J. Upham American politician

Don Alonzo Joshua Upham was an American lawyer and politician. He served as the 4th Mayor of Milwaukee and was the Democratic candidate for Governor of Wisconsin in the 1851 election. He also served as President of the first Wisconsin Constitutional Convention and United States Attorney for Wisconsin. He was sometimes referred to as "D. A. J. Upham" in historical documents.

Wisconsin Territory territory of the USA between 1836-1848

The Territory of Wisconsin was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from July 3, 1836, until May 29, 1848, when an eastern portion of the territory was admitted to the Union as the State of Wisconsin. Belmont was initially chosen as the capital of the territory. In 1837, the territorial legislature met in Burlington, just north of the Skunk River on the Mississippi, which became part of the Iowa Territory in 1838. In that year, 1838, the territorial capital of Wisconsin was moved to Madison.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and on the State Register of Historic Places in 1989. [5]

Alexander Chadbourne Eschweiler was an American architect with a practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He designed both residences and commercial structures. His eye-catching Japonist pagoda design for filling stations for Wadham's Oil and Grease Company of Milwaukee were repeated over a hundred times, though only a very few survive. His substantial turn-of-the-20th-century residences for the Milwaukee business elite, in conservative Jacobethan or neo-Georgian idioms, have preserved their cachet in the city.
