Wayne F. Whittow

Wayne F. Whittow (August 16, 1933) is an American politician, former Wisconsin legislator and retired City Treasurer of the City of Milwaukee. He is a Democrat. [1]

Background

Whittow was born in Milwaukee. He graduated from Washington High School in 1951, attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He then went to work at the AC Spark Plug factory in their engineering administration department.

Public office

In 1960, in his first race for public office at the age of 26 (his brother George was a city alderman), [2] he received the Democratic nomination for the 16th district of the Wisconsin State Assembly by a 3-vote margin (1472–1469). [3] [4] He was then elected to the first of three consecutive terms in the House. In 1967, he moved up to the Wisconsin State Senate, representing the 11th Senate District. He was twice re-elected, and eventually served as Senate Majority Leader until being elected Milwaukee City Treasurer in 1976. (He had previously run, unsuccessfully, for City Comptroller in 1968 [5] and for City Treasurer in 1972). [6]

Personal life

Whittow holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He is a lifelong resident of Milwaukee. He and his wife Paula have three sons and (as of January 2010) six grandchildren.

David A. Cullen is an American lawyer who is serving as the current Treasurer of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Prior to his election, Cullen served as a Democratic member of the Wisconsin State Assembly after winning a special election in May 1990. Cullen was elected in April 2012 to a seat on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, which he held until taking office as County Treasurer.

George F. L. Hampel, Sr., was an American politician, accountant and bookseller from Milwaukee who served one term in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Socialist (1931–1932) and two terms in the Wisconsin State Senate as a Progressive (1937–1944). Hampel at various times identified himself as a Social Democrat/Socialist, and Progressive; and joined the Republicans when the Progressives rejoined the latter party.

Chris Lee Kapenga is an American politician and, since 2015, a member of the Wisconsin State Senate. A member of the Republican Party, he is elected from the 33rd senatorial district. He became the president of the state Senate in 2021.

Edwin W. Knappe was an American machinist from Milwaukee who became a lawyer, and who served one term as a Socialist member of the Wisconsin State Assembly.

Warren Daniel Braun is a retired American educator, Catholic deacon, and Democratic politician. He served six years in the Wisconsin State Senate (1977–1983) representing the west side of the city of Milwaukee, and was a member of the Milwaukee Common Council and the Milwaukee School Board.

James Butler Brennan was an American attorney and Democratic politician from the U.S. state of Wisconsin. He was United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin during the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and later served twelve years as Milwaukee's city attorney. Earlier in his career, he served two and a half years in the Wisconsin State Senate.

Walter Polakowski was an American upholsterer, trade union activist, and small business owner from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who served as a Socialist member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and Wisconsin State Senate for a total of 14 years. He was the older brother of John Polakowski, who succeeded him in the Assembly in 1922.

Max J. Galasinski was an American stonecutter, sculptor, sanitation supervisor and alderman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who served one term as a Democratic member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and one term in the Wisconsin State Senate.

Mark G. Lipscomb, Jr., is an American lawyer, former postal clerk and politician from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who served four terms as a Democratic member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and one partial term in the Wisconsin State Senate.

Louis Fons was an American businessman, banker, Polish American activist and newspaper publisher from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who served a term as a Republican member of the Wisconsin State Senate representing the 8th District.

David J. Cannon was an American attorney who served as Milwaukee County District Attorney from 1968 to 1969 and as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin from 1969 to 1973. Cannon was the last Republican to serve as Milwaukee County District Attorney.
