The Westeinderplassen ("West End Lakes") are a complex of lakes belonging mostly to the territory of Aalsmeer, Netherlands. Their total area is about 10 square kilometres (2,500 acres)2, making it the largest freshwater body of water in the Randstad area.

Geography

Towns situated on the lakefront include Aalsmeer, Kudelstaart, Burgerveen, Leimuiden, and Rijsenhout.

The northern part in particular contains hundreds of small islands. Many of these are privately owned and can only be reached by boat.

Economy

The northwestern part of the lakes connect directly to the Ringvaart, which sees significant commercial shipping. The bulk of the lakes, though, are used mostly for recreational boating.

Clear Lake is the name of a natural spring fed body of water located in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa near Clear Lake, Iowa. It is approximately 3,684 acres (15 km2) in size. It is a popular fishing destination, with walleye, yellow bass and channel catfish. People from Des Moines and Minneapolis–Saint Paul have had homes on the shores of the lake since the 1870s. The average depth is 10 feet (3 m) and the maximum depth is 30 feet (9 m), in the dredged area of the west end. The lake has 13.6 mi (22 km) of shoreline. As of 2004, the lake has seen major efforts undergone to restore its natural clarity, including filtration systems, dredging, and education of local farmers to reduce toxic pesticides from entering the lake. Aalsmeer Flower Auction is a flower auction that takes place in Aalsmeer, Netherlands. It is the largest flower auction in the world. The Aalsmeer Flower Auction building is the fourth largest building by footprint in the world, covering 518,000 square metres. Flowers from all over the world – Europe, Israel, Ecuador, Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and other countries—are traded every day in this gigantic building. Around 43 million flowers are sold daily. This increases by around 15 percent around special days such as Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Their flowers are subjected to around 30 quality checks so that they can be graded on a scale.

Kamer 2 Sailing Marathon

The Kamer 2 Sailing Marathon was a 50 kilometer steeplechase type regatta for sloops in the lake district between Amsterdam and Leiden in The Netherlands. The race is held each year in September and attracts some 70 participants. Boats can be manned by a crew of three or, for all female teams, four. The race leads from the Kaag Lake through Does and Wijde Aa to the Braassemermeer and from there through the Ringvaart to the Westeinderplas. There a turning point is situated directly beneath the watertower of Aalsmeer from where the race goes back along the Ringvaart to the Kaag Lake.
