The Western Pennsylvania Championships [1] formally known as the Western Pennsylvania Amateur Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1889. [2] The tournament ran annually through till 1981 as part of the ILTF Independent Tour until it was discontinued. [3]

History

In September 1889 the first Tennis Championship of Western Pennsylvania was held with the men's singles event won by a Mr. Christy. [4] In 1910 a women's event was added to the schedule won by Jane Craven. [3] The tournament was an official event of the USNLTA Circuit from 1889 to 1923. [3] In 1924 after the United States National Lawn Tennis Association became a member of the International Lawn Tennis Association it became part of the worldwide ILTF Circuit till 1969. Following the creation of the Grand Prix circuit in 1970 this event became part of the ILTF Independent Tour until 1981. [3]

Previous winners of the men's title has included Bill Tilden II, [3] David O'Loughlin, [5] [3] Larry Dee, [6] George Pryor, [7] Eddie Dibbs and Vitas Gerulaitis. [3] Former winners of the women's singles title included; Hazel Hotchkiss, Mary Browne, Molla Bjurstedt, Martha Guthrie, Shirley Fry, and JoAnne Russell

The 1972 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix was a professional tennis circuit held that year and organized by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF). It consisted of 33 Grand Prix tournaments in different categories including three of the four Grand Slam tournaments and was followed by a season-ending Masters tournament. The circuit ran from February through November.

The Cumberland Hard Court Championships or Cumberland Club Hard Court Championships and also known as the Cumberland Hard Court Tournament was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded as in 1927. It was played at the Cumberland Club, Hampstead, London, England until tournament ended in 1986.

The Shropshire Championships or Shropshire Open Championship or Shropshire County Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament first established in 1903 as the Championship of Shropshire. The Pennsylvania State Clay Court Open Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1932 as the Pennsylvania Clay Court Championships. It was staged annually Allentown then Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, United States. In 1972 it ceased to part of the official worldwide ILTF Circuit.

The Alverstoke Open was an annual combined tennis tournament founded in 1909 as the Gosport Tournament at Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. The tournament was mainly played on grass courts except for the 1921 to 1923 editions which were played on clay courts. The tournament was part of the ILTF Circuit and ended in 1981.

The Danish Seniors National Championships (Closed) also known is a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1889 as the Danish National Championships . The tournament ran annually through from 1921 to 1968 as part of the worldwide ILTF Circuit. In 1969 it became part of the ILTF Independent Tour until 1982 when it was dropped from that schedule. Today it is and ITF Seniors G3 tournament.

The Dieppe International Championship also known Championnat international de Dieppe also known as the Dieppe International Tennis Championship Cup was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1888 as the Dieppe LTC Tournament . The tournament was held at the Club de tennis de Dieppe, Dieppe, France and ran annually through 1966 when it was dropped from that schedule of the ILTF Circuit.

The White Mountains Tennis Championships or the White Mountains Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1890 as the East Side of the White Mountains Championships, a sanctioned event of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association. The tournament was first organised by the Iron Mountain Lawn Tennis Association, and held at the Iron Mountain LTC, Jackson, New Hampshire, United States.

The New Hampshire State Championships, also called the New Hampshire Championships, was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1895 as a sanctioned event of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association. It was first held at the Center Harbor LTC, Center Harbor, New Hampshire, United States. The tournament was held in conjunction with the White Mountains Tennis Championships from 1905 to 1950. The Old Dominion Championship also known as the Old Dominion Open Championship was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1905. It was first played at the Hermitage Golf Club, Richmond, Virginia, United States in 1905. In 1936 the final edition was played Country Club of Virginia, after which when it was downgraded from the main worldwide ILTF Circuit and discontinued.

The Gulf State Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1892 as the Gulf Coast Championships. It was first played at the Tampa Bay Lawn Tennis Club, Tampa Bay Hotel, Tampa, Florida, United States in 1892. In 1968 the final edition was played at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after which when it was downgraded from the main worldwide ILTF Circuit.
