Westville Prison is located on the outskirts of Westville (eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality), a town inland of Durban. It is one of the largest prisons in South Africa and the only prison located in the Durban area. As of 2005, there were 40,000 inmates at Westville Prison. [1]

Location

The prison is located on the southern edge of Westville, in the suburb of Dawncliffe. The entrance to the complex is on Harry Gwala Road. Between the prison and Westville proper is the complex housing the prison's wardens and other staff. Roosfontein Nature Reserve acts as a buffer area surrounding the rest of the prison.

The University of Natal was a university in the former South African province Natal which later became KwaZulu-Natal. The Westville Correctional Facility, located in Westville, Indiana, is a state-operated prison for adult males. The facility contains sections of three levels of security. Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women (LCIW) is a prison for women with its permanent pre-2016 facility located in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, United States. It is the only female correctional facility of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is immediately west of LCIW. LCIW includes the state's female death row. As of 2017 the prison has temporarily moved due to flooding that occurred in August 2016, and its prisoners are housed in other prisons. The administration is temporarily located in the former Jetson Youth Center near Baker. By 2021 the Baker area address was given for the prison on the LCIW website.

Palmiet Nature Reserve is located in Westville, a town located ten kilometres from Durban, South Africa. The reserve is made up of a wide variety of natural habitats ranging from forests to grassland. Hundreds of bird species have been recorded and the tree list is extensive. There are a number of self-guided trails that include river crossings. The diversity seen in the Palmiet Nature Reserve has been extensively threatened by human activity and invasive species, leading to the need for more pronounced guidelines on how to protect and reserve the area.
