Tennis was part of the Summer Olympic Games program from the inaugural 1896 Summer Olympics, but was dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics due to disputes between the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the International Olympic Committee over how to define amateur players. After two appearances as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984, it returned as a full medal sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics open for all players regardless of their age and status and has been played at every summer Games since then.
Defending champion Shingo Kunieda defeated Maikel Scheffers in the final, 6–0, 6–0 to win the men's singles wheelchair tennis title at the 2009 US Open. It was his second US Open singles title and eighth major singles title overall, and he dropped just four games en route.
Defending champion Peter Norfolk defeated David Wagner in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 6–3 to win the quad singles wheelchair tennis title at the 2009 US Open.

Maikel Scheffers defeated Nicolas Peifer in the final, 3–6, 7–6(7–2), 6–0 to win the men's singles wheelchair tennis title at the 2012 Australian Open.
Stéphane Houdet defeated the four-time defending champion Shingo Kunieda in the final, 6–2, 6–4 to win the men's singles wheelchair tennis title at the 2013 US Open. It was his first US Open singles title and third major singles title overall.
