When the Dust Settles is the third full-length album from Australian hip hop group, Downsyde and was released in December 2004 through Obese Records. It was produced by band members Optamus, Dazastah, Cheeky and Armee. All tracks were recorded and mixed at various members' homes except for flutes on "Bring It All Black" and "Arabian Knights", which were recorded at Studio Couch in Fremantle, Western Australia.

At the J Award of 2005, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year. [1]

Several tracks from the album received airplay from radio stations around Australia, including 4ZZZ (Brisbane), [2] FBi (Sydney), [3] 3RRR (Melbourne) [4] and RTRFM (Perth). [5]

Background

Downsyde was formed in Perth, Western Australia when MC Optamus (Scott Griffiths) and MC Dyna-mikes (Shahbaz Rind) were in Year 11 at Craigie Senior High School in 1996. [6] The duo released a tape demo called Behind the Bucket, selling copies at two local shops. [6] [7] The group added a third MC, Dazastah (D. Reutens), whom they met at Leederville TAFE, and DJ Armee (Damien Allia) on turntables, met at the Hyde Park Hotel where he would DJ on Monday nights. Later, the group expanded to include percussionist Salvatore (Salvatore Pizzata) (ex-Beaverloop) and Cheeky (Mat Cheetham) (ex-Circus Murders) on keyboards, loops & samples joining the group. [6]

In September 2000 Downsyde released their debut album, Epinonimous —recordings made during 1996–2000. Their first single, "Gifted Life", was released two years later, and was nominated as 'Best Single' at the 2003 Australian Dance Music Awards. [8] Their second album, Land of the Giants , was released in 2003 on the Hydrofunk label. [9] It won 'Most Popular Local Original Album' at the 2003 Western Australian Music Industry Awards. [10]

Downsyde signed with Obese Records and in 2004 released a single, "Lesfortunate", which they followed up with their third album, When the Dust Settles, in December. The album was nominated for the 2005 J Award. [11]

In 2007 the band signed with Illusive Records [12] and commenced recording their next album, once the final tracks were down on tape they then headed off to India to play a couple of shows for the Mumbai Festival. [13]

We've changed labels every album. We did Epinonimous independently, Land of the Giants on EMI/Hydrofunk and When the Dust Settles on Obese. After When the Dust Settles was released, we need to take time away from touring and a whole lotta other stuff to do with the industry; we felt there was a whole lotta pressure for us to release another album a year and a half later and to do all of this stuff mechanically, which creatively didn't feel right. We specifically sign one album deals, whereas a lotta artists get bullied into three album deals and get shockingly ripped off, spat out and are not a musician two years later.

The group's fourth album, All City was released on 4 October 2008, it features collaborations with Howling John Stone and Guru.

Obese Records

Obese Records was a record label that released music from the Australian hip hop genre. It was the largest Australian independent hip hop label, including performers Pegz, Thundamentals and Dialectrix. Obese Records also operated two retail stores in Melbourne, a record distribution company, a soul imprint named Plethora Records, and operates the artists' management and touring company Obese Records Artist Management.

Matthew Victor Barrett, who performed as Matty B, is a former Australian hip hop rapper and MC. Originally from Perth, he released an album, The Courageous LP, in 2002 on Obese Records. He relocated to the Gold Coast in 2006 and followed with an eight-track extended play, Simple but Effective in May, on his own label, B-Style Entertainment.

Downsyde are an Australian hip hop group from Perth, Western Australia. The group is composed of three members, Optamus, Dazastah and Dyna-Mikes.

Land of the Giants is the second album from the Western Australian hip hop group, Downsyde. It was released through Virgin/Hydrofunk Records on 17 February 2003. It peaked at No. 6 on the ARIA Hitseekers Albums chart. Guests on the album included DJ Fdel and Porsah Laine.

Paul Reid, formerly Paul Gary James Ridge,, better known by the stage name Drapht, is an Australian hip hop artist from Perth. Drapht is a member of the Syllabolix (SBX) crew, a collective that includes fellow Perth-based hip hop artists such as Downsyde.

Layla Rose Hanbury, known mononymously as Layla, is an Australian hip hop singer-songwriter and MC from Perth. In January 2005 she released her debut solo album, Heretik, on Obese Records. She is a member of Syllabolix (SBX) Crew, with other MCs including her husband, Dazastah. The couple also perform as Layla and Dazastah. During September and October 2011 the duo were a support act for another SBX artist, Drapht, on his Australia-wide Party Party Party Tour.

<i>All City</i> (Downsyde album) 2008 studio album by Downsyde

All City is the fourth official studio album from Western Australian hip hop group, Downsyde. It was released in October 2008 through their new label, Illusive Sounds.

Robert Alan Hunter, better known as Hunter or Huntz, was an Australian rapper and hip hop artist. He was a founder of Perth's hip hop scene in the 1990s and a member of the MC collective Syllabolix (SBX) Crew. During his career, he released four albums: Done DL (2002), Going Back to Yokine (2006), Monster House (2010) and Fear and Loathing (2011).

Kerser Australian rapper

Scott Froml, better known by his stage name Kerser, is an Australian rapper. He has released two mixtapes and several albums since 2009 and his second album No Rest for the Sickest reached No. 15 on the ARIA albums chart, while the album's tour DVD debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA Music DVD chart in 2013. His album S.C.O.T. reached No. 5 while his fourth album King was released on 13 November 2014 and reached number 9.
