Recording sessions for the album took place at RCA Victor's Music Center of the World Studio in February and December 1963 and January 1964. The cover photo was taken by American photographer Wallace Seawell. Ain't That Good News was the final studio album to be issued during Cooke's lifetime, before his death at the age of 33. With the exception of "Another Saturday Night", which had been released as a single early in the previous year, Ain't That Good News comprised the first material that Cooke had recorded in the six months following the drowning death of his 18-month-old son Vincent.

It was written by band members Lee Ryan, Duncan James, Antony Costa, and Simon Webbe along with Wayne Hector, Mich "Cutfather" Hansen, Jason Gill, and Daniel Davidsen and recorded for their fourth studio album, Roulette (2013). Production was helmed by Hansen, Gill, and Davidsen. "Without You" was released as the album's third single on 16 May in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, where it reached the top 50 of the German and the Swiss Singles Chart.

Ten songs competed in a televised show where "Cliche Love Song" performed by Basim was the winner as decided upon through the combination of jury voting and public voting over two rounds.

It was released on the soundtrack to the film Dr. Dolittle 2 in June 2001 and appears in the film. In September 2001, it was released as the third single off their self-titled debut album (2001). The song failed to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100 but managed to peak at number 25 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. It fared better in Europe, reaching the top 40 in Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
