Critical reception

Whistleblower has been generally well received by critics. Peter Chambers of Resident Advisor gave an extremely positive review, awarding the album four and a half stars out of five and saying, "Every time Ripatti makes an album he seems to be remaking music itself, re-defining what is possible to sound out through timbre, rhythm, melody."

Resident Advisor online music magazine

Resident Advisor is an online music magazine and community platform dedicated to showcasing electronic music, artists and events across the globe. It was established in 2001. RA's editorial team provides news, music and event reviews, as well as films, features and interviews. The website also manages services that include event listings, ticket sales, club and promoter directories, photo galleries, artist and record label profiles, DJ charts, an online community, and the RA Podcast.

Other reviews were more mixed. Andy Battaglia of Pitchfork Media gave the album 7.1 out of 10, but criticized its lack of similarity to Ripatti's more house-oriented work as Luomo, calling the album a "tease" and saying "the Luomo aura helps as much as it hurts, mostly by making Delay's dubby hesitations and ambient lack of pacing resonate all the more for the decisions they imply." Nate Dorr of PopMatters awarded it 6 out of 10 and calling it "above all an exercise in atmosphere."

House music is a genre of electronic dance music created by club DJs and music producers in Chicago in the early 1980s. Early house music was generally characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats, rhythms provided by drum machines, off-beat hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized basslines. While house displayed several characteristics similar to disco music, which preceded and influenced it, as both were DJ and record producer-created dance music, house was more electronic and minimalistic. The mechanical, repetitive rhythm of house was one of its main components. Many house compositions were instrumental, with no vocals; some had singing throughout the song with lyrics; and some had singing but no actual words.
