White Lies is a 2024 South African crime thriller miniseries created by Sean Steinberg and written by Darrel Bristow-Bovey. Developed by Quizzical Pictures and Fremantle for M-Net, it stars Natalie Dormer and Brendon Daniels.
In Bishopscourt, Cape Town, South Africa, investigative journalist Edie Hansen finds herself at loggerheads with veteran detective Forty Bell, after her estranged brother is murdered in his luxury home, with his teenage children the prime suspects for the crime. [1]
In March 2023, it was announced that Brendon Daniels and Natalie Dormer would star in White Lies. [2] The series is produced by Harriet Gavshon and Nimrod Geva for Quizzical Pictures, with Natalie Dormer and Bristow-Bovey executive producers. Julie Hodge is executive producing on behalf of Fremantle, which is also distributing the series internationally. The lead director is John Trengove, alongside Thati Pele, Catharine Cooke and Christiaan Olwagen. [3] [4]
Principal photography began in South Africa on 6 March 2023. [5] Filming lasted for three months, with locations including Cape Town. [6] [7]
Dormer describes it as "a wonderful, fun, whodunit" with "universal themes" such as "the identity of politics, and inequality". [8] She said “For Brits, Americans, Australians watching the show, there are huge universal themes of identity, the chasm between the haves and the have nots, and social commentary, corruption commentary,.. We know all that from our own countries, but seen through South African eyes it’s different.” [9]
A first trailer for the series was released in February 2024. [10]
White Lies had its world premiere in Israel, streaming on VOD from 26 February 2024. [11] It premiered in South Africa on M-Net, DStv channel 101 on 7 March 2024. [12] Episodes were aired weekly. [13]
In Australia, it was shown on the streaming service Stan in April 2024. [9]
The Sydney Morning Herald called the series a "sharp crime thriller". [9]

Sea Point is an affluent and densely populated suburb of Cape Town, situated in the Western Cape, between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean, a few kilometres to the west of Cape Town's Central Business District (CBD). Moving from Sea Point to the CBD, one passes first through the small suburb of Three Anchor Bay, then Green Point. Seaward from Green Point is the area known as Mouille Point, where the local lighthouse is situated. It borders to the southwest the suburb of Bantry Bay. It is known for its large Jewish population, synagogues, and kosher food options.

The Cape Independence Party (CAPEXIT), previously called the Cape Party, is a political party in South Africa which seeks to use all constitutional and legal means to bring about Cape independence, which includes the entire Western Cape, Northern Cape, six municipalities in the Eastern Cape, and one municipality in the Free State. The area includes all municipalities in those provinces with an Afrikaans-speaking majority. In 2009, it was claimed to have had a membership of approximately 1,000 people across South Africa, but official membership figures are not made public. The party currently holds two seats on the Cape Town City Council.

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) is a right-wing political party in South Africa, formed in November 2013 by, among others, businessmen Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene. Trackers is an internationally co-produced crime thriller television series produced by Three River Fiction and Scene23. It is an adaptation of Deon Meyer's 2011 novel of the same name, and it was adapted for television by British showrunner Robert Thorogood, leading a team of South African writers. It is the first co-production between South Africa pay-TV channel M-Net, German public broadcaster ZDF and American HBO's sister network Cinemax. Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution also distributes the series on behalf of Home Box Office's "Home of HBO" exclusive package lineup worldwide, with the exception of MultiChoice and ZDF's territories of operations, respectively.
Blood & Water is a South African teen crime drama television series developed by Gambit Films for Netflix starring Ama Qamata, Khosi Ngema and Gail Mabalane. Set in Cape Town, the series follows a girl who transfers to an elite school when she suspects one of the students may be her sister, who was abducted as a baby.

He is best known for his roles in the South African television series Vallei van Sluiers and Die Francois Toerien, and international productions Trackers (2020) and White Lies (2024), as well as films such as Four Corners (2013), Zulu, and I Now Pronounce You Black and White. He has also performed on stage many times.
Reyka, released as The Cane Field Killings in some countries, is a South African crime thriller television series created and written by Rohan Dickson. It is an M-Net original production co-produced by Quizzical Pictures and Serena Cullen Productions for subscription television channel M-Net, released in July 2021. Reyka was also co-produced for international distribution by Fremantle.
