WhyHotel is an alternative hospitality service provider that creates pop-up hotels. The company uses yet-to-be-leased units in new apartment buildings as fully furnished hotel suites. As such, the company does not own any real estate listings.

History

WhyHotel was founded in January 2017 by real estate developers Jason Fudin and Bao Vuong. [1]

The company's first pop-up hotel was a pilot program from January to May 2017 which included 50 empty units at an apartment building in Pentagon City, Virginia, owned by owned by Vornado Realty. [2] WhyHotel then spun off of Vornado Realty and became an independent, venture-backed startup in the summer of 2017. [3]

The company received $3.9 million in seed funding in June 2018, [4] and $20 million in Series B funding in December 2019. [5]

In 2018, WhyHotel opened pop-up hotels in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. [6] [7] [8] T

he following year, in 2019, WhyHotel opened pop-up hotels in Ballston, Virginia in April 2019, Seattle in September 2019, and Tysons, Virginia in December 2019. In 2020, the company has opened a pop-up hotel in Houston and announced new locations in Maryland, and Arlington. [9] [10]

In May 2019, WhyHotel announced a new business arm called Hospitality Living, which aims to deliver flexible use home and hotel buildings constructed by WhyHotel. The company aims to construct the first of this type of building in 2022. [11]

888 Seventh Avenue is a 628 ft (191m) tall modern-style office skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan which was completed in 1969 and has 46 floors. Emery Roth & Sons designed the building. 888 Seventh Avenue is L-shaped in plan, with wings extending north to 57th Street and east to Seventh Avenue, around the adjacent Rodin Studios. It currently carries the Vornado Realty Trust corporate headquarters. Previously known as the Arlen Building, it had been named for the company responsible for its construction, Arlen Realty & Development Corporation. The Red Eye Grill is located in the building at street level.

The former Radisson Hotel Baltimore Downtown-Inner Harbor, now-branded as the Vivo Living Apartment Towers, was a temporarily vacant high-rise hotel-turned-apartment complex located in Baltimore, Maryland, opened in 1967. The former hotel complex contained 707 rooms in two nearly identical towers. The south tower was converted to a separate hotel in 2018, the Holiday Inn Baltimore - Inner Harbor, sharing all facilities with the Radisson. Both hotels closed permanently in March 2022, when the conversion to apartments began.

Michael D. Fascitelli is an American businessman. He is a member of the Vornado Realty Trust board of trustees and former CEO and president of the company before stepping down from day-to-day responsibilities on February 26, 2013. He is a co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, and in 2017 founded a $500 million SPAC, Landscape Acquisitions, with Noam Gottesman where they both serve as co-chairman. Since stepping back from day-to-day responsibilities at Vornado, Fascitelli has formed MDF Capital, a family-office investment firm, Landscape Acquisitions, a hospitality and real estate focused SPAC, and Imperial Companies. He serves on the board of real estate technology startup Cadre.
