The Wigman House is a historic American Queen Anne house in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. [3] It is a City of Pittsburgh Designated Historic Structure. [2]
The four-bedroom home was constructed in 1896 for William H. Wigman, the owner of Wigman Lumber on the South Side. [3] [4] At the time, Carrick, which sits upon a hilltop south of Pittsburgh, was a popular neighborhood for wealthy entrepreneurs who sought to escape the smoke of the city. [3] The Wigman House is all that remains from this area known as "Millionaire's Row" [4]
Since 1952, the house has been owned by the McClory family; in 2011 they placed the property for sale, seeking $150,000, a move that set local preservationists into action. [3] The owner of a neighboring funeral home, Congressman Harry Readshaw, considered purchasing and demolishing the building for parking for his funeral home, across the street from the property. [3] Members of the Carrick-Overbrook Historical Society sought to block Readshaw's purchase by nominating the home for historic status, calling it "the last remaining example of several homes of the wealthy South Side gentry who lived in Carrick." [3] The owners, the McClory family, opposed the nomination, concerned that the designation would harm its chances to sell. [5] The Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh identifies the building as a top-priority historic preservation opportunity. [6]
In April 2011, the city's Historic Review Commission approved the historical society's application, [7] setting the stage for contentious hearings before the Pittsburgh City Council. [4]
The historic status was opposed by City Councilman Ricky Burgess, expressing a concern about the rights of the house's current owners. [4] In a reversal, the current owners changed their position on the historic status in a letter to the Council, citing historic tax credits and the possibility that the house's historic value could be a selling point. Originally called Fairhaven, the name was changed to Overbrook when breaking away from Baldwin Township to become a borough. Overbrook is located at the edge of the city, south of Downtown, and is surrounded by the city neighborhoods Brookline and Carrick and the boroughs of Castle Shannon and Whitehall. Overbrook Borough was one of the last annexed into the City of Pittsburgh. The historic Overbrook Community Center retains its borough origins and is still used by the community.

The Pittsburgh Light Rail is a 26.2-mile (42.2 km) light rail system in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and surrounding suburbs. It operates as a deep-level subway in Downtown Pittsburgh, but runs mostly at-grade in the suburbs south of the city. The system is largely linear in a north-south direction, with one terminus just north of Pittsburgh's central business district and two termini in the South Hills. The system is owned and operated by the Port Authority of Allegheny County. It is the successor system to the streetcar network formerly operated by Pittsburgh Railways, the oldest portions of which date to 1903. The Pittsburgh light rail lines are vestigial from the city's streetcar days, and is one of only three light rail systems in the United States that continues to use the Pennsylvania Trolley (broad) gauge rail on its lines instead of 4 ft 8+1⁄2 instandard gauge. Pittsburgh is one of the few North American cities that have continued to operate light rail systems in an uninterrupted evolution from the first-generation streetcar era, along with Boston, Cleveland, New Orleans, Newark, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Toronto.

Harry A. Readshaw III is a retired American politician. He was a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 36th District from 1994 until 2020. He and his wife live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and have three children. He graduated from Carrick High School in 1959 and attended Duquesne University from 1959 to 1962. He graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1962. Prior to elective office, he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and in the Carrick Community Council. He has been a funeral director since 1970.
Paramount Film Exchange is a building at 1727 Boulevard of the Allies in the Uptown or Bluff neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, designed in 1926 by R. E. Hall Co. architects from New York City. In 2010, the building was bought by arts-oriented local entrepreneurs who founded the Paramount Film Exchange (PFEX), Inc., to redevelop the then-abandoned building in a historically sensitive manner.
The Jacob Kamm House, also called the Jacob Kamm Mansion, is a French Second Empire style mansion in Portland, Oregon, built in 1871. It was moved from its original location on SW 14th and Main to its current location in Goose Hollow in 1950 to make room for Lincoln High School's campus. It was purchased by preservationist Eric Ladd for $1,000 at auction and moved to its present location, along with two other houses Ladd was interested in preserving, at SW 20th and Jefferson, which was called "the colony."
The relationship between the City of Washington, Pennsylvania, and Washington & Jefferson College spans over two centuries, dating to the founding of both the city and the college in the 1780s. The relationship between the town and college were strong enough that the citizens of Washington offered a $50,000 donation in 1869 to the college in a successful attempt to lure the Washington & Jefferson College trustees to select Washington over nearby Canonsburg as the consolidated location of the college. However, the relationship was strained through the latter half of the 20th century, as the college pursued an expansion policy that clashed with the residential neighborhood. The college's frustrations grew after preservationists unsuccessfully attempted to pass laws prohibiting the college from demolishing certain buildings that were listed on the East Washington Historic District. Relations were so bad that residents and college officials engaged in a shouting match at a meeting. Local preservationists also unsuccessfully tried to block the demolition of Hays Hall, which had been condemned.
Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation is a non-profit educational institution in Washington, Pennsylvania. Its purpose is to encourage and assist the preservation of historic structures in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The foundation operates its own landmark certification process, as well as working with the National Park Service to document and place landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places. It also offers advice and assistance for historic building owners who wish to preserve their facilities. Since its inception, the foundation has been successful in helping many historic building owners in the preservation of their structures.
184 38th Street, also known as McBride Log House, was a historic log house in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Before its demolition, it was thought to be the oldest log house in any major American city to be used as a residence.

The Carrick Borough Building or Carrick Municipal Building is a historic building in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1905–06, shortly after Carrick was organized as a borough, and housed the town's municipal government, volunteer fire department, and jail. After Carrick was annexed into the city of Pittsburgh in 1927, the building remained in use as a fire station until 1957 and has since been converted to commercial use. The Borough Building was designed by Edward Stotz in an eclectic style with strong Dutch Revival influences. It was nominated as a Pittsburgh historic landmark by Preservation Pittsburgh in October 2018 and the designation was approved in April 2019.

The Ewalt House was a historic house in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a contributing property in the Lawrenceville Historic District. It was built as a country estate sometime between 1787 and 1840 by Samuel Ewalt, and remained standing after most of the land was subdivided for residential lots in the 1870s. The house was notable as a rare example of an antebellum Greek Revival house in Pittsburgh, and exemplified the typical pattern of development in Lawrenceville in the mid to late 19th century. In 2019, the building was nominated as a Pittsburgh historic landmark.
