Wilfred Williams is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. He played for Eastern Suburbs, Western Suburbs and St. George and in the NSWRL competition.
Williams is the father of former rugby league player Joe Williams.
In 1984, Williams represented NSW Country against NSW City. Williams made his first grade debut for Eastern Suburbs in round 1 of the 1985 NSWRL season against arch rivals South Sydney. Williams played from the bench in a 34-16 loss. In 1986, Williams signed for Western Suburbs and made 22 appearances as the club finished second last on the table. Williams played one final season in the NSWRL with St. George in 1987. [2] [3] [4] [5]
The Western Suburbs Magpies is an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as the club is commonly referred to, was one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. The club currently fields sides in the NSW State Cup, Ron Massey Cup (Opens), S.G. Ball Cup and Harold Matthews Cup competitions.
The Newtown Jets are an Australian rugby league football club based in Newtown, a suburb of Sydney's inner west. They currently compete in the NSW Cup competition, having left the top grade after the 1983 NSWRFL season. The Jets' home ground is Henson Park, and their team colours are blue and white.
George Peponis is a Greek Australian company director and former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative hooker, he played in the NSWRFL Premiership for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, with whom he won the 1980 Grand Final. He also captained the Bulldogs and New South Wales, and played in eight Test matches for Australia between 1978 and 1980, captaining the side on five consecutive occasions between 1979 and 1980.
Lidcombe Oval is a playing field and velodrome in the Western Sydney suburb of Lidcombe and is part of Wyatt Park. It was first opened in 1933 with a completely flat track velodrome. Within a year the velodrome was rebuilt to include the banking that we see today. It is situated in the western end of Church Street, on the northern side of the railway line. The outfield has a capacity of more than 20,000 spectators. While the venue has been used for a number of sports over the years, velodrome has been in continuous use for track cycling events. Lidcombe-Auburn Cycle Club since 1947, and Neo Cycling Club since 2015.
Jason Paul Williams is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A New Zealand international representative winger, he played his club football in Australia for Sydney's Western Suburbs Magpies, Eastern Suburbs Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the Penrith Panthers as well as in England for Salford. Williams played 145 games in the Australian competition from 1987–88 and 1991–98, scoring a total of 63 tries and winning the 1995 ARL Premiership with the Canterbury club. Williams played in 12 test matches for New Zealand between 1991 and 1995, scoring one try. He played in one non-test international on the 1993 Kiwis tour against Wales and two World Cup matches.
