Willem Botha (born 17 April 1987) [1] is a South African singer, actor and music producer from Riversdale, Western Cape. He was the runner-up of Afrikaanse Idols reality music programme and predominantly performs Afrikaans language songs. [1]

Contents

Early career

Botha studied drama at the University of Stellenbosch in 2006. However he delayed his studies to take part in Afrikaanse Idols. He finished as the runner up of the programme but received a recording contract from Sony and moved to Johannesburg. [1] Later in 2006, he released his debut album "Kô Ma Hier". [1]

Eurovision

Botha has had an association with the Eurovision Song Contest since Afrikaanse Idols. In 2009, he released "Hi Hi Ho", also promoted as "Hi Hi Ho (Bokke Weergawe)" (English: "Hi Hi Ho (Springbok version)") [2] as an Afrikaans adaptation of the Latvian 2008 Eurovision Song Contest entry "Wolves of the Sea" by Pirates of the Sea, with the lyrics being adapted to support the South Africa national rugby union team (colloquially known as the Springboks). [3] [4] Later that year he released his second album titled "Sê My Nou" which was nominated for the best Afrikaans Sokkie Dans album at the 16th South African Music Awards. [5] In 2013, he helped to produce the 2013 Belarusian Eurovision entry "Solayoh" and was part of the performance act as one of Alyona Lanskaya's backing singers. This made him the first South African to perform at Eurovision. [a 1] [6]

Acting

Botha made his acting debut in the Afrikaans language film Liefling, Die Movie in 2010. [7] In 2013, he played his first television acting role in Donkerland. [1]

kykNET Television channel

kykNET is a South African Afrikaans-language television channel. Owned by pay-TV operator M-Net, it was launched on the DStv satellite service in 15th November 1999. On 16 July 2014 DStv announced that kykNET would be broadcast in high-definition from 12 August 2014.

Derick Hougaard, more commonly known as the 'Liefling of Loftus' was a South African professional rugby union player who played for Leicester Tigers and Saracens in England. He normally played at flyhalf. Hougaard played for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup competition in South Africa and the Bulls in the international Super Rugby competition.

Riku Lätti is a South African singer, songwriter and writer. After Riku matriculated in 1991 at Hoërskool Florida, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, he studied philosophy at University of the Witwatersrand where he finished his honours degree. He changed his name to Victor S. Wolf and claimed that Riku Latti is "dead". Since then he composed the complete film score for Jans Rautenbach's film "Abraham" on which he was credited as Riku Lätti, thereby being effectively resurrected.

Latvia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Wolves of the Sea" written by Jonas Liberg, Torbjörn Wassenius, Johan Sahlen and Claes Andreasson. The song was performed by the group Pirates of the Sea. The Latvian broadcaster Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) organised the national final Eirodziesma 2008 in order to select the Latvian entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. Twenty songs were selected to compete in the national final, which consisted of three shows: two semi-finals and a final. In the semi-finals on 2 and 9 February 2008, five entries were selected to advance from each show: three entries selected based on a public televote and two entries selected by an eight-member jury panel. Ten songs ultimately qualified to compete in the final on 1 March 2008 where two rounds of public voting selected "Wolves of the Sea" performed by Pirates of the Sea as the winner.
