William David Sanders (born December 2, 1941) is an American real estate businessman and developer. [1] [2]

Biography

Sanders was born in 1941 in Ramsey County, Minnesota, the son of Marion Jane (Birkenstein) and David Edwin Sanders, an advertising agency owner. [1] His father was born in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, to German Jewish immigrants. Sanders' maternal grandfather was born in Chicago to German Jewish parents while his maternal grandmother was also born in Chicago to Irish Catholic parents. [3] [4] [5] He was raised in El Paso, Texas. [6] In 1964, Sanders graduated from Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. [7] In 1968, he founded the real estate firm LaSalle Partners, headquartered in Chicago. In 1999, LaSalle Partners merged with Jones Lang Wooton to form Jones Lang LaSalle. [2]

He served as chairman of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). [7] In 1999, he received Cornell's "Entrepreneur of the Year" award. [7]

Sanders once managed a real estate portfolio of $20 billion, and was referred to as the "Warren Buffett of real estate" by Bloomberg News in 1999. [8]

Personal life

Sanders married Louann H. Feuille on May 18, 1974 in El Paso. [9] They have two sons and three daughters.

Sanders' middle daughter, Amy, is the wife of Beto O'Rourke, former Democratic U.S. Rep. of Texas's 16th congressional district. [10]

The primary for all parties was held on March 6, 2018, making it the first primary of the 2018 season. As Cruz and O'Rourke both won majorities in their primaries, they did not participate in the May 22 runoff primary that was held for some nominations in Texas.

All statewide elected offices are currently held by Republicans. In his previous gubernatorial race in 2018, Abbott won with 55.8% of the vote.

He previously served in the El Paso City Council from 2005 to 2011. O'Rourke came to national prominence during his 2018 United States Senate campaign in Texas, where he narrowly lost to incumbent Republican Ted Cruz. He later sought the 2020 Democratic nomination for President, but ended his campaign before any votes were cast.
