Ndawoyakhe Wilson Ngcobo is a South African politician who served in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2006 and from 2009 to 2014. In the interim, he served briefly in the National Assembly from 2006 to 2009. He was a member of the Democratic Party (DP), later the Democratic Alliance (DA), until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to join the African National Congress (ANC). In 2015, he left the ANC to establish the National Religious Freedom Party, a KwaZulu-Natal-based party of which Ngcobo is president.

Political career

In the 1999 general election, Ngcobo was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature, ranked fifth on the DP's provincial party list. [1] He was re-elected to his seat in 2004 under the DP's successor party, the DA. However, during the 2005 floor-crossing window, he announced that he had left the DA to join the ANC. [2] He said that he was attracted by the ANC's progressivism, saying that, "Some of the white people in the party think the DA is there to serve white people's interests only". [2]

On 7 August 2006, the ANC sent him to the National Assembly, where he filled a casual vacancy in the ANC caucus. [3] In the 2009 general election, he was returned to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature, [4] where he served until the next general election in 2014. [5] In 2015, he left the ANC to form the NRFP. [6] The party contested the 2019 provincial election in KwaZulu-Natal, with Ngcobo ranked first on the party list, but it did not win any seats. [5]

KwaZulu-Natal is one of the nine multi-member constituencies of the National Assembly of South Africa, the lower house of the Parliament of South Africa, the national legislature of South Africa. The constituency was established in 1994 when the National Assembly was established by the Interim Constitution following the end of Apartheid. It is conterminous with the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The constituency currently elects 41 of the 400 members of the National Assembly using the closed party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2019 general election it had 5,524,666 registered electors.

Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2014 to 2019. In 2020 she was appointed chief of staff in the office of Pemmy Majodina, the Chief Whip of the Majority Party in the National Assembly. Mondli Abednego Chiliza is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2019. Sipho Joseph Gcabashe is a South African politician and businessman who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature until 2019, when he failed to gain re-election. He was also Provincial Secretary of the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal branch from 1996 to 2005.

Sithembiso Wiseman Mshengu is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was elected to the provincial legislature in the 2019 general election, ranked 35th on the ANC's provincial party list.

Bonginkosi Meshack Radebe is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature until May 2019. He was formerly Deputy Speaker in the legislature and also served as a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in KwaZulu-Natal from 2009 to 2014. He was known for his role in mediating the political violence between the ANC and Inkatha in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal in the 1990s.

Belinda Francis Scott is a South African politician who was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2014 to 2019. She served several terms in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2019, representing the African National Congress (ANC) from 2002 onwards after defecting from both the Democratic Party and the Inkatha Freedom Party. After she left the provincial legislature in 2019, she served as Deputy Mayor of eThekwini from September 2019 until she resigned from politics in February 2021.

Langalakhe Nicholas "Senzo" Mkhize was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature. Formerly an activist in the ANC Youth League, he served in the National Assembly from 2009 until 2010, when he was transferred to the provincial legislature. He remained in the provincial legislature until his death in 2016 and was its Chief Whip from 2014 onwards. At the time of his death, he was also a member of the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal branch.

Bonga Nkanyiso Mdletshe is a South African politician and traditional leader who represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1996 to 2014. During this period, he served as Speaker in the legislature from 1998 to 2004. A lawyer by training, he entered politics during apartheid as a member of the government of the former bantustan of KwaZulu.

Lydia Johnson is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature until 2019. She was the legislature's Speaker from 2013 to 2019 and previously served in the KwaZulu-Natal Executive Council between 2006 and 2011: she was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works from 2006 to 2009 and MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development from 2009 to 2011. In June 2022, she was appointed board chairperson at Ezemvelo.

Mohammed Rafeek Sayedali Shah is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal. He represented the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and from 2012 to 2014, and later in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. In 2022, he announced that he had left the DA to join ActionSA.

Arthur Roy Ainslie is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2014 and before that in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 1999.
