The Worcestershire Championships [1] also known as the Worcestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships or the Worcestershire Grass Court Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tournament originally founded in 1908. [2] It was held Malvern, Worcestershire, England until 1974

History

The Worcestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships were established in 1908. [3] The tournament was staged continuously until 1915 just after the start of World War I. The tournament resumed in 1919 until 1939 when it ceased for six years until after World War II. It resumed in 1946 and continued for another 28 years until 1974 when it was abolished. [4]

Previous winners of the men's singles title included; Roy Allen, Ryuki Miki, Isaías Pimentel, Anand Amritraj, Frew McMillan and Patricio Rodríguez. Winners of the women's singles championship included; Ethel Thomson Larcombe, Phoebe Holcroft Watson, Dorothy Round, Erika Vollmer, Angela Mortimer, Anne Haydon and Jenny Dimond.

Venue

Manor Park is a member-run sports club located Malvern, Worcestershire, Great Britain that was founded in 1907. [5] The Manor Park Club's tennis facilities today include 14 outdoor courts consisting of 4 synthetic grass courts with floodlights, 4 acrylic hard courts, 2 with floodlights, 2 artificial clay courts with floodlights and 4 original grass courts for summer play. [6] Indoor facilities include 3 acrylic indoor tennis courts. [7]

The 1880 Men's tennis tour was the fifth amateur tennis tour held that year. It now incorporated 41 tournaments staged in Australia, Great Britain and Ireland and the United States. The 1880 Wimbledon Championships was won by John Hartley against Herbert Lawford, in the Challenge Round.

The 1881 Men's tennis tour was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 65 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The Wimbledon Championships and Irish Championships was won by William Renshaw, the U.S. National Championships was won by Richard Sears collecting his second title other big winners were Richard Taswell Richardson picking up the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships and Ernest Renshaw winning the Princes Club Championships, The title leader this season was Robert W. Braddell winning 4 tournaments from 6 finals.

The Cromer Covered Courts Championships or formally the Cromer Covered Courts Tournament or simply the Cromer Covered Courts was an open men's and women's international indoor Clay tennis tournament founded in 1925. The tournament featured two editions of the event, one was held in the autumn known, and was known as the Cromer Covered Courts Autumn Meeting and the other in the spring. The tournaments were organised by the Cromer Covered Courts Club and held at the indoor courts at Newhaven Court, Cromer, Norfolk, England. The event ran until 1965.

Droitwich Open

The Durham and Cleveland Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded as in 1900 as the Durham County Association Tournament In 1903 that event became the Durham County Lawn Tennis Championships. It was first played at the Ashbrooke Sports Club Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England until the tournament ended in 1982.
