World Konkani Day

World Konkani Day (Konkani : Vishwa Konkani Dis) has been celebrated on 1 August every year since 2015. [1] It is in remembrance of Konkani activist, Shenoi Goembab [2] [3] On this day, Konkani language writers are honored.

Goembab's influence

Goembab is credited with having written seven books in Latin or Romi Konkani and 22 in Konkani in the Devnagri script, His works comprise short stories, dramas, novels, poetry, essays, works on linguistics, philosophy and history. [3] He is also considered as a ideological founder of the Konkani cause by language protagonists in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Celebrations

In 2017, the event was observed for the first time in Belagavi, formerly Belgaum, which lies in Karnataka State. [4] Bishop of Belagavi, Rev. Peter Machado has been quoted saying that Konkani speaking people in the region comprised to Saraswats, Christians, Daivadnyas and Konkan Marathas, yet "the Konkani speaking people from the upper ghats region comprising from Yellapur to Kolhapur have painstakingly conserved the language and culture, the legacy that needs to be carried forward till the next century." [4]

Other celebrations

Konkani Day has also been observed on 20 August, the day on which Konkani was included as part of the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This celebration was marked in 2017 at a school in Margao, Goa, the Vidya Vikas Mandal. [5]

Mandd Sobhann in Mangalore (now Mangaluru) has also organised a World Konkani Convention, though different from the event mentioned above. [6]

In Abu Dhabi, a Konkani Cultural Day was held in April in 2018. [7]

World Konkani Unity Day was also scheduled to be held in December in 2010 in Mangalore. [8]

World Kokani Day was held for the first time in January 2020 in Mumbai. [9]

World Goa Day

Another day, called the World Goa Day is also organised on 20 August, for the past two decades, [10] by volunteers in various pockets across the globe, more to link up the diaspora from Goa with their home and among themselves.

Belagavi district, formerly also known as Belgaum district, is a district in the state of Karnataka, India. The district is known as the sugar bowl of Karnataka with 150,000 hectares being used for commercial production. It has overtaken Mandya district in sugarcane production over the last decade. The city of Belgaum (Belagavi) is the district headquarters in Belagavi district. It houses the Second legislative building, where the Karnataka Legislature holds session once a year. The district is famous for its native sweet, Kunda. Wilfred Gerald "Wilfy" Rebimbus was an Indian singer, songwriter, lyricist and playwright famed for his Konkani and Tulu language compositions. He is popularly nicknamed as the Konkan Kogul meaning cuckoo (songbird) of the Konkan.

Mangalorean Catholics are an ethno-religious community of Latin Christians from the Diocese of Mangalore and the erstwhile South Canara area, by the southwestern coast of present-day Karnataka, India.

The Belagavi border dispute or Belgaon border dispute is a dispute between the Indian states of Karnataka and Maharashtra over the administration of Belagavi. Monti Fest is a major Catholic festival held on 8 September every year by the Latin Catholic community of Konkani people, originating in the Konkan region of India, and their descendants in the Canara region of south India. This festival celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and in the Mangalorean Catholic community involves blessing of Novem. In certain Goan Catholic dialects the festival's name is corrupted to "Moti Fest".

Basti Vaman Madhav Shenoy was an Indian Konkani activist, popularly known as "Vishwa Konkani Sardar" and was the founder of World Konkani Centre in Shakthinagar, Mangalore.

World Konkani Centre was founded by Konkani Bhas Ani Sanskriti Prathistan at Konkani Gaon, Shakti Nagar, Mangalore, to serve as a nodal agency for the preservation and overall development of Konkani language, art and culture involving all the Konkani people the world over.

The Konkani language agitations were a series of protests and demonstrations in India, concerning the uncertain future of the Konkani language. They were held by Goans in the former union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu; then under the administration of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). The protests involved citizen journalism, student activism and political demonstrations. The civil unrest ceased when official status for Konkani in the Devnagari script was granted.

The All India Konkani Parishad is a national conference held in India. It is meant to support the Konkani people and Konkani language, and conducts various activities to achieve that goal, aided by local authorities

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Madhavi Sardesai</span> Indian academic (1962–2014)

Madhavi Sardesai was an Indian academic and the editor of the Konkani literary journal "Jaag". She was also a scholar, publisher and writer who worked mainly in the Konkani language in Goa. She headed the Goa University's Konkani Department. She died on 22 December 2014 after a battle with cancer.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Konkani liturgical music</span>

Konkani liturgical music refers to the sacred music used in the liturgy in the Konkani language. Konkani is used in liturgy in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, and the dioceses of Mangalore, Karwar, Udupi and Sindhudurg.

Eric Alexander Ozario is an Indian Konkani music composer, cultural activist, and the founder of Mandd Sobhann, a leading Konkani cultural organization. He also founded Kalaangann, a Konkani heritage centre. Ozario was instrumental in Konkani being approved as an optional language in school education in the state of Karnataka. He has also been the secretary general of the Jagotik Konknni Songhotton for many years.
