World Military Basketball Championship is a championship annually held in the beginning of summer between men and women serving in the military from around the world.
The 2009 championship was held in Klaipėda, Lithuania. Ten nations participated in this event in Taikos 61 Sports Center in Klaipėda, Lithuania. The arrival of the teams occurred on June 6, 2009. The nations were divided into two groups of five. In the preliminary round, nations would battle each other once for a total of 4 games. Then, the top two teams would qualify to the finals (1st-4th place), and the next two teams would qualify to relegation round (5th-8th place). Teams will depart on June 15, 2009.

The Ice Hockey World Championships are an annual international men's ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). First officially held at the 1920 Summer Olympics. The IIHF was created in 1908 while the European Championships, the precursor to the World Championships, were first held in 1910. The tournament held at the 1920 Summer Olympics is recognized as the first Ice Hockey World Championship. BC Prienai was a Lithuanian professional basketball club based in Prienai. They played domestically in the Lithuanian Basketball League every year since winning the promotion in 2009. During the 2008–09 season, then called Rūdupis, they became the champion of the NKL and won the challenge match for a slot in the LKL. In their debut LKL season Rūdupis took seventh place, while next two seasons brought BC Prienai two bronze LKL medals. BC Prienai played in EuroCup 2011–12 with moderate success; the team won 3 games out of 6, but nonetheless failed to qualify for the next stage. More recently, the team has become a strong competitor in domestic tournaments, more than once upsetting teams such as Žalgiris Kaunas and Lietuvos rytas Vilnius. Oleg Verniaiev's silver was Ukraine's first medal in the event since 2000. Max Whitlock's bronze was Great Britain's first since the 1908 Games in London.

Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
