The World Mime Organisation (WMO; French: Organisation Mondiale des Mimes, WMM) is a nonprofit organization that promotes the art of mime and nonverbal communication. It was officially registered on January 4, 2004, in Belgrade, Serbia (at that time still the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro).
WMO was established by Marko Stojanović, [1] a Serbian actor, professor and mime artist, and Ofer Blum, a mime artist from Israel. Both were students of the Paris International School of Mimodrama Marcel Marceau (Ecole International de Mimodrame da Paris Marcel Marceau) in the early 1990s.[ citation needed ]
In 1998, Stojanovic organized a tour in Serbia (at that time, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) for Ofer Blum. Belgrade, Serbia, was chosen for its headquarters due to the location's low administrative and financial costs. Stojanovic served as the president of the organization and Ofer Blum was the vice-president. [2] [3] The association statutes of the WMO were adopted on April 18, 2011. [4]
World Mime Day is a World Mime Organisation initiative to celebrate the art of mime and non-verbal communication. It was first observed in 2001 and falls on March 22, the birthday of French mime artist Marcel Marceau. World Mime Day is not officially recognized by UNESCO.
The first Mime Day Wiki Edit-a-Thon was organized in 2016 by the World Mime Organisation, Wikimedia chapters and mime supporters. [5]
In 2015, the World Mime Organisation established two "Special WMO Awards", one for individuals and the other for institutions. The "Special WMO Award for the Outstanding Contribution to the Art of Mime" is awarded to individuals, and the "Special WMO Award for Promotion and Development of the Art of Mime" is for institutions.
WMO notes that "some of the laureates think of this award as of the Life Achievement Award but [they] believe that even if some of them are in their late 70's, 80's they still have horizons to reach, new heights to achieve and share their art and knowledge with the world. This award is a simple but official way for the international mime community gathered in the World Mime Organisation to say "THANK YOU" to the laureates". [6]
The first laureate in 2015 was Amiran Shalikashvili, a Georgian mime artist and one of the founders of mime in Georgia and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), as well as the founder of the Georgian State Pantomime Theatre. [7] In 2016, the same award was presented to professor Stanislaw Brosowski, [8] a Swedish mime artist of Polish origins and the founder of the Department for Mime Acting at the Stockholm Academy for Dramatic Arts. The World Mime Organisation (WMO) defines "institutions" broadly, encompassing more than just physical locations. It includes any organized entity, such as theatres, schools, festivals, production companies, or media outlets. [10] The laureates were: [11]
Marcel Marceau was a French mime artist and actor most famous for his stage persona, "Bip the Clown". He referred to mime as the "art of silence", performing professionally worldwide for more than 60 years.
Carlos Martínez is a Spanish mime actor. He has participated in the formation of various theatre groups and has taught mime and theatre in public schools, at the University of Zaragoza and at numerous international art seminars. He has published two manuals on mime, In Silence and Word of Mime.
Samy Molcho is an Israeli mime and an expert in body language communication. He was professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts and at Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, Austria until 2004.
Jean-Louis Bernard Barrault was a French actor, director and mime artist who worked on both screen and stage.
A mimeartist, or simply mime, is a person who uses mime, the acting out of a story through body motions without the use of speech, as a theatrical medium or as a performance art. In earlier times, in English, such a performer would typically be referred to as a mummer. Miming is distinguished from silent comedy, in which the artist is a character in a film or skit without sound.
Corporeal mime is an aspect of physical theater whose objective is to place drama inside the moving human body, rather than to substitute gesture for speech as in pantomime.

Roberto Escobar and Igón Lerchundi were pioneers in the art of miming in Argentina and in Latin America. In 1959 they both founded the "Compañía Argentina de Mimos" and toured around many countries in America and Europe. They later participated in the First International Pantomime Festival, which took place in Berlin in 1962, along with the most renowned mimes in the world Based on their success in this Festival they organized a long tour throughout Europe. At that time they had the opportunity to study in Paris with Etienne Decroux, the creator of 20th-century miming. Throughout their long careers they have obtained innumerable national and international awards. In 1973 they created the "Mimoteatro Escobar-Lerchundi", the only theatre dedicated to miming in America and one of the few in the world. Their Miming School is located at this theatre, in the traditional San Telmo district, where they receive students from all over the country and the world.
Vahram Zaryan is a French performance artist, mime, dancer, director, and choreographer of Armenian descent.
Georges Wague, born Georges Marie Valentin Waag, was a French mime, teacher and silent film actor.
Grigory Gurevich is a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, photographer, illustrator, bookmaker, mime and inventor. Originally from Leningrad, Russia, he now resides in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Partha Pratim Majumder is a Bangladeshi mime artist who is considered the "forerunner" of mime art in Bangladesh. Born in Pabna District in the north-western part of the country, Partha went to France in early 1980s under a scholarship program and trained under Marcel Marceau. Since then he has been performing in several countries throughout the world earning international recognition. In 2010, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak, one of the highest civilian awards in Bangladesh. In 2011, the French government awarded him the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He is the elder brother of musician Bappa Mazumder and music composer Partha Sharothi Mojumdar.
Yerevan State Pantomime Theatre was founded in 1974. The status of the State Theatre received in 1983.
