The album received positive reviews upon its release. From IGN's 90% rating to Rock Sound's 70%, the album has been well received. Chad Grischow of IGN said "Regardless of whether you have followed the tale from the start or this is your first taste of Madina Lake, World War III proves to be a satisfying conclusion to the tale and stands up well on its own as simply a great rock album." Kerrang! rated the album 4 Ks out of 5 and stated that "There is much to like about World War III, both in terms of its energy and its exuberant and determined quality."

The Smashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock band from Chicago. Formed in 1988 by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the band has undergone several line-up changes since their reunion in 2006, with Corgan being the primary songwriter and sole constant member since its inception. The current lineup consists of Corgan, Chamberlin, and Iha. The band has a diverse, densely layered sound, which evolved throughout their career and has contained elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, grunge, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegaze, dream pop, and electronica.
Siamese Dream is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins, released on July 27, 1993, by Virgin Records. The album was produced by Butch Vig and frontman Billy Corgan. Despite its recording sessions being fraught with difficulties and tensions, Siamese Dream debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200, and was eventually certified 4× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with the album selling over six million copies worldwide, catapulting the Smashing Pumpkins to mainstream success and cementing them as a significant group in alternative music.

Avenged Sevenfold is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, released on October 30, 2007, through Warner Bros. and Hopeless Records. Recorded in the middle of 2007, it is the band's first studio album to be solely self-produced. It is also their final studio album to feature The Rev performing on drums before his death during production of their follow-up album, Nightmare (2010). New Device are a UK-based hard rock band, established in late 2007. The band's style is rooted in classic rock of the 1980s, influenced by bands such as: Aerosmith, Skid Row, Metallica and Guns N' Roses. The Dresden Codex is the second EP by alternative rock band Madina Lake and follow-up to their second studio album Attics to Eden from 2009. The release was self-produced after announcing that they had left their label, Roadrunner Records in April 2010. They subsequently set up an account on the website Pledgemusic to help fund the EP, which is sold to fans who have pledged as well as donating a percentage of the money raised to the Keep A Breast Foundation. On September 1, 2010, the band released "They're Coming for Me" to iTunes, after being recorded days before bassist Matthew Leone was attacked. The full EP was released on December 10, 2010, for download on Pledgemusic.
