Marcelo Xavier Hervas Mora (born 7 October 1972) is an Ecuadorian businessman and politician who is running for President of Ecuador in the 2023 election. He previously ran for president in the 2021 election as the Democratic Left nominee, being eliminated in the first round. Hervas was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He is president of the company NovaAlimentos SA. [1]

Hervas was also president of the engineering faculty at the University of La Sabana in Colombia. [2] He is also a shareholder of the Metropolitan Hospital in Quito, one of the country's largest hospitals. [1]

His 2021 presidential campaign was popular on social media such as TikTok for his progressive stance on legalizing abortion, marijuana and LGBTQ+ related issues. [3] After being eliminated in the first round, he endorsed Guillermo Lasso in the run-off. [4] After Lasso assumed the presidency, he became one of his strongest critics. [5]

In March 2022, President Lasso accused Hervas of blackmailing him in exchange for tax favors, a claim that Hervas denounced. [6]

In June 2023, Hervas officially became a presidential candidate for the 2023 election and was endorsed by the RETO Movement. [7]

Although delaying the election due to the COVID-19 pandemic was discussed, the CNE announced on 15 December 2020 that the electoral calendar would not shift and confirmed elections would take place in February 2021.

A constitutional referendum was held in Ecuador on 5 February 2023, alongside the 2023 Ecuadorian local elections. The binding consultation was called on 29 November 2022 by President Guillermo Lasso. Voters were asked to approve or reject a total of eight questions surrounding changes to the Constitution of Ecuador. Soon after the referendum, Reuters, Al Jazeera, CNN en Español and the Financial Times projected the failure of all eight of its proposals, with president Guillermo Lasso eventually conceding defeat. Turnout for the referendum was estimated at 80.74%.

In Ecuadorian politics, muerte cruzada is the name commonly given to a mechanism governing the impeachment of the president of Ecuador and the dissolution of the National Assembly provided for in Articles 130 and 148 of the 2008 Constitution.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Ecuadorian political crisis</span>

A political crisis began in Ecuador on 17 May 2023 as a result of the impeachment trial against President Guillermo Lasso. The impeachment inquiry began in the National Assembly on 9 May and lasted until 17 May when Lasso dissolved parliament through the constitutional provision known as muerte cruzada. That triggered the end of the impeachment inquiry as it dissolved the National Assembly and caused an earlier general election. The mutual dissolvement marks the first time this constitutional measure has been triggered by an Ecuadorian president.
