Yavuz Mildon (born 1 June 1955 in Turkey) is a Turkish politician of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the former president of the Congress of the Council of Europe, of which he remains an honorary member.

Early life

Since he graduated in economics from the University of Istanbul, Yavuz Mildon has worked in the food-processing sector. He runs the Mildon Fish and Shellfish Company [1] in Gelibolu, Çanakkale in the Marmara Region and is owner of a seafood export company. From 1988 to 1992 he was president of the Gelibolu Chamber of Commerce. [2]

Career

Mildon’s political career began when he was elected to the Provincial Council of Canakkale in the 1994 local elections. He became a member of the Congress of the Council of Europe in 1995 and served as President of its Chamber of Regions from 2004 to 2008 and as its President of Congress from May 2008 to October 2010, when he was succeeded by Keith Whitmore. He was also the head of the Turkish delegation to the Congress. Due to Mildon’s health problems, Ian Micallef served as acting President of the Congress from January 2009 to October 2010. [3] [4]

Mildon stood in the March 2009 local elections and was elected to the Provincial Council of the Sultangazi district of Istanbul (Sultangazi ilçesinden İl Genel Meclis). [5] [6] In August 2009, he made his first public appearance since December 2008, when he received a visit from the mayor of Sultangazi. [7]

In 2016 the Congress presented him with a medal. By then he was an honorary member. [8]

He is married with two children.

The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge is a road suspension bridge in the province of Çanakkale in northwestern Turkey. Situated just south of the coastal towns of Lapseki and Gelibolu, the bridge spans the Dardanelles, about 10 km (6.2 mi) south of the Sea of Marmara. The bridge was officially opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on 18 March 2022 after roughly five years of construction. The year "1915" in the official Turkish name honours an important Ottoman naval victory against the navies of the United Kingdom and France during World War I.

The electoral system of Turkey varies for general, presidential and local elections that take place in Turkey every five years. Turkey has been a multi-party democracy since 1950, with the first democratic election held on 14 May 1950 leading to the end of the single-party rule established in 1923. The current electoral system for electing Members of Parliament to the Grand National Assembly has a 7% election threshold.

Umut Oran is a Turkish textile manufacturer and a centre-left politician who currently serves as a Vice President of Socialist International since 13 December 2014. He served as a Member of Parliament for Istanbul's 3rd electoral district during the 24th Parliament of Turkey, lasting between 2011 and 2015. He is a member of the Republican People's Party (CHP), having formerly served as a Deputy Leader of the party and the President of the CHP Administrative and Financial Affairs Department. Dr Hande Özsan Bozatlı, is a dermatologist and former President of the Assembly of European Regions. In 2009 she became Vice-President of Istanbul Special Provincial Council and a President of the EU and International Relations Committee. At the same time, she became a member of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. Hande Özsan Bozatlı has been active as member at the Assembly of European Regions since 2009. This led to her election as President of the AER Committee on Culture, Education, Youth and International Cooperation in 2010. In May 2013, she was elected President of the Assembly of European Regions. She was re-elected in December 2015.

Berna Gözbaşı is a Turkish businesswoman and sports executive. She was the first female president of Kayserispor football club, which plays in Turkey's senior men's league.

Local elections in Turkey took place throughout the country's 81 provinces on 31 March 2024. A total of 30 metropolitan and 1,363 district municipal mayors, alongside 1,282 provincial and 21,001 municipal councilors were elected, in addition to numerous local non-partisan positions such as neighborhood representatives (muhtars) and elderly people's councils.
