Yolanda D. Jones King is a retired American laser scientist and defense engineer who worked for many years in the Air Force Research Laboratory. She is a Fellow of the AIAA, a regent of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) and the wife of Gary King, the former attorney general of New Mexico.
King was a chemistry student at the University of New Mexico, [1] where she completed a Ph.D. in 1981. [2] Her doctoral research concerned high-energy chemical lasers. [1]
After working on beam sensing at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), she moved to the Strategic Defense Initiative Office, [1] became a program manager for several large Ballistic Missile Defense Organization projects, [2] and in 1996 worked as a science and technology advisor to Ron Dellums as a Congressional Fellow. [1] Next, she became technical advisor for space sensing and satellite control at AFRL, [2] including leading the work there on space-based radar. [1] [2] After directing the AFRL International Office in Arlington, Virginia, she returned to the Space Vehicles Directorate of AFRL, where she became technical advisor for space infrared technologies and later technical advisor for the Spacecraft Technology Division. [1]
She retired in 2014, [2] from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, while continuing to serve as a defense consultant through Engility Corporation. She was nominated as a regent of New Mexico Tech in 2019 by governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, [3] and is the 2023 past president of the New Mexico branch of the International Women's Forum. [4]
King was named as a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2003. [5] [6] She is a 2003 recipient of the Zia Award of the University of New Mexico Alumni Association. [1]
King's father, James Paul Jones, worked in the United States Navy, and her mother, Lucille Ovela Jones, was an activist in the Democratic Party. [7] She is married to Gary King, the former attorney general of New Mexico. They first met at a campaign event for Gary King's father Bruce King, in 1978, when both were chemistry students. They married in 1987. [8]
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is a scientific research and development detachment of the United States Air Force Materiel Command dedicated to leading the discovery, development, and integration of direct-energy based aerospace warfighting technologies, planning and executing the Air Force science and technology program, and providing warfighting capabilities to United States air, space, and cyberspace forces. King previously served as an advisor in the United States Department of Energy, a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, and the Democratic nominee for New Mexico governor in the 2014 election.
Jerome Pearson was an American engineer and space scientist best known for his work on space elevators, including a lunar space elevator. He was president of STAR, Inc., and has developed aircraft and spacecraft technology for the United States Air Force, DARPA, and NASA. He held several patents and was the author of nearly 100 publications in aircraft, spacecraft, electrodynamic tethers, SETI, and global climate control.
XSS-10 was a small, low-cost micro-spacecraft developed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate to test technology for line-of-sight guidance of spacecraft. The project was initiated at AFRL by Program Manager David Barnhart and completed by Georgia Tech Research Institute engineer Thom Davis and team. The project was declared a success shortly after launch.

He is a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety and, the Royal Astronomical Society. Jah was also selected into the 10th anniversary class of TED Fellows and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2022. He also was selected into the AIAA class of Fellows and Honorary Fellows in the year of the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11. The AIAA "confers the distinction of Fellow upon individuals in recognition of their notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences or technology of aeronautics and astronautics."
