Yumna Marwan is a Lebanese-Palestinian television and film actress.

Early life

Born in Lebanon, [1] Marwan grew up in Beirut before moving to Iowa in the United States as a teenager. [2] [3] She graduated with a degree in Anthropology from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts in 2013. [4]

Career

Marwan made her screen debut in 2013, when she starred in her first feature film The Valley by Lebanese writer and director Ghassan Salhab. [2] In 2016, she was the lead actress in the Mounia Akl short film Submarine which won the Muhr Jury Prize at the Dubai International Film Festival. [5] [6]

In 2020 she appeared in Tangiers-set television series Little Birds alongside Juno Temple, playing the part of dominatrix Cherifa Lamor, in her first English-language screen role. [1] [7] [8] That year, she was in the film Translator , directed by Rana Kazkaz and Anas Khalaf. In 2021, she starred in Mounia Akl’s debut feature film Costa Brava, Lebanon . [2]

That year, she again worked with Ghassan Salhab on his 2021 film The River. [9] She also appeared in Shahid original series Hell's Gate, directed by International Emmy Award winner, Amin Dora, set in a futuristic Beirut and considered the first Arab science-fiction series. [10] [11]

In 2023, she played Lauren in Amjad Al-Rasheed’s drama feature film Inshallah a Boy . [12] [13]

In 2024, she has a main role in Steven Knight espionage thriller television series The Veil alongside Elisabeth Moss. [14] [15]

She has two daughters born in 2022 and 2024.[ citation needed ]

Inshallah a Boy is a drama film, directed by Amjad Al Rasheed and released in 2023. A coproduction of companies from Jordan, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt, the film stars Mouna Hawa as Nawal, a recently widowed woman who must pretend to be pregnant in order to protect herself and her daughter from Jordan's patriarchal inheritance laws, which would permit her husband's family to take everything he owned, leaving Nawal with nothing, solely because she did not bear him a son.
