Yvan Mayeur (born 24 January 1960 in Etterbeek) is a former Belgian politician, former member of the Socialist Party and former mayor of Brussels from 2013 until 2017.

Nationally, Mayeur was a member of the Chamber of Representatives since 1999, and previously from 1989 to 1995.

Locally, Mayeur is elected city councillor of Brussels since 1995 and the chairperson of the CPAS/OCMW of Brussels until he took office as mayor of Brussels on 13 December 2013, succeeding Freddy Thielemans who resigned due to his age. [1] In 2017, Majeur was forced to offer his resignation as mayor of Brussels after it had become apparent that he had stolen from Samusocial  [ nl ], a municipal humanitarian emergency service for the homeless in Brussels. He was entitled to receive a fee for each meeting, but the number of meetings had been increased tremendously, with many of them not even having taken place. [2]

Mayeur quit the Socialist Party on 30 June 2017, days before the party leadership would deliberate about his membership. [3] He was succeeded as mayor of Brussels by Philippe Close (PS).

At the general election of 3 July 2005, the Socialist Party lost its majority and the Democratic Party of Albania (PD) formed the new government, having secured, with its allies, a majority of 81 seats.

2006 Belgian local elections

The Belgian provincial, municipal and district elections of 2006 took place on Sunday 8 October 2006. The electors have elected the municipal councillors of 589 cities and towns as well as the ten provincial councils. The voters in the town of Antwerp have also been able to vote for the city's district councils. In seven Flemish municipalities with a special language statute and in the Walloon municipality of Comines-Warneton the aldermen and the members of the OCMW/CPAS council have also been directly elected.

He is the son of Leo Vanackere, who, following a political career as a Member of the Chamber of Representatives and the Senate of Belgium, became the Provincial Governor of West-Flanders in 1979. His grandfather, Remi Wallays, had also been a senator and had been a former Mayor of Wevelgem.

Jewish Museum of Belgium shooting 2014 terrorist attack in Brussels, Belgium

On the afternoon of 24 May 2014, a gunman opened fire at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels, killing four people. Three of them, an Israeli couple on holiday and a French woman, died at the scene. The fourth victim, a Belgian employee of the museum, was taken to the hospital but died of his injuries on 6 June. A little less than a week later, on 30 May 2014, a suspect was arrested in the French city of Marseille in connection with the shooting. The suspect was Mehdi Nemmouche, a 29-year-old French national of Algerian origin. A second suspect, Nacer Bendrer, was identified and arrested later.

2019 Belgian federal election

Federal elections were held in Belgium on 26 May 2019, alongside the country's European and regional elections. All 150 members of the Chamber of Representatives were elected from eleven multi-member constituencies.

Philippe Close is a Belgian politician, member of the Socialist Party and the current mayor of the city of Brussels.

The government formation of 2019–2020 started one day after the federal elections, regional elections and European elections which were all held simultaneously on 26 May 2019. These formations are only the second under King Philippe.
