In Christianity, an anchorite or anchoret is someone who, for religious reasons, withdraws from secular society to be able to lead an intensely prayer-orientated, ascetic, or Eucharist-focused life. Anchorites are frequently considered to be a type of hermit, but unlike hermits, they were required to take a vow of stability of place, opting for permanent enclosure in cells often attached to churches. Also unlike hermits, anchorites were subject to a religious rite of consecration that closely resembled the funeral rite, following which they would be considered dead to the world and a type of living saint. Anchorites had a certain autonomy, as they did not answer to any ecclesiastical authority apart from bishops.

The essay has been called "the most perfect though not the best-known of Tolkien's academic pieces". Tolkien and Neil Ripley Ker later edited a volume of the text for the Early English Text Society.
Tammy van Wisse is a long-distance swimmer from Australia. 1990 she won the Lake Zurich Swim. As a marathon swimmer she swam the Murray River in 2001, a distance of 2,438 kilometres and the English Channel in 1993 in a time of 8h 35mins and again in 1994 in a time of 8h 33mins. In July 2006, van Wisse broke an 81-year-old record for the 35-mile swim from New York City to Sandy Hook, and retired from competitive swimming the same year to start a family, 20 years after her first marathon swim. She now works as an environmentalist and a motivational speaker.
Antwerp Mannerism is the name given to the style of a group of largely anonymous painters active in the Southern Netherlands and principally in Antwerp in roughly the first three decades of the 16th century, a movement marking the tail end of Early Netherlandish painting, and an early phase within Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting. The style bore no relation to Italian Mannerism, which it mostly predates by a few years, but the name suggests that it was a reaction to the "classic" style of the earlier Flemish painters, just as the Italian Mannerists were reacting to, or trying to go beyond, the classicism of High Renaissance art.
