Z. A. Morshed (died 2013) was an additional deputy inspector general of the Bangladesh Police. [1] He died in the Mirpur textile factory fire in 2013.
Morshed joined the police cadre from the 12 batch of Bangladesh Civil Service. [2]
During the 2001-2006 Bangladesh Nationalist Party rule, Morshed was denied promotions and prestigious postings due to being from Gopalganj District, which is viewed as a stronghold of the opposition Awami League. [2] The Bangladesh Nationalist Party government denied promotions to police officers from Gopalganj District, Faridpur District and religious minority communities. [2] In 2001, he was transferred to the Armed Police Battalion in Bilaychchari, Rangamati District. He went on to serve with the Armed Police Battalion in Uttara and Sylhet. [2]
In 2010, Morshed was the superintendent of police of Chittagong District. [3] During his time, Hefazate Islam Bangladesh emerged as a political force in Chittagong District, indulging in violent clashes with the police. [4] He detained 250 students at the University of Chittagong following violent clashes between students and vandalism. [5] While he was there, the 2012 Hathazari violence took place, which was a communal clash between the majority Muslim community and the minority Hindu community. [6] The clashes started after a rumor went viral on Facebook alleging some Hindus had desecrated the Koran. [6]
Morshed died at a fire on 2 May 2013 in the factory of Tung Hai Sweater Limited in Darus Salam Thana. [7] [8] He was rescued from the fire and died at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases emergency room. [9] He was then an additional deputy inspector general of the police. [10] Six others were killed in the fire, including Sohel Mostafa Swapan, president of Comilla District North unit of Jubo League, and Mahbubur Rahman, managing director of Tung Hai Sweater Limited and Morshed's friend. [10] There were 200-300 workers in the garment factory at the time of the fire. [10] The fire took place at around the same time Rana Plaza collapsed. [11] [12] His bodyguard, Ripon Chakma, also died in the fire. [9]

The Rana Plaza collapse occurred on 24 April 2013, when the eight-storey "Rana Plaza" commercial building collapsed due to a structural failure. The rescue team's search ended on 13 May 2013, with a confirmed death toll of 1,134. Approximately 2,500 injured people were rescued from the building. It is considered as one of the deadliest structural failures in modern human history, as well as the deadliest garment-factory disaster in history, and the deadliest industrial accident in the history of Bangladesh. Amnesty International called this "The most shocking recent example of business-related human rights abuse."
Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh is a far-right conservative-islamic advocacy group consisted mostly of hard-line religious teachers and students. The group is mainly based on qawmi madrasas in Bangladesh. In 2013, they submitted a 13-point charter to the Government of Bangladesh, which included the demand for the enactment of a blasphemy law.

A series of rallies, demonstrations, and blockades opposing the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were held in Bangladesh from 19 to 29 March, on the celebration of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan. Accusing Narendra Modi of committing crimes against humanity during the 2002 Gujarat riots, the protesters agitated against what they alleged were India's anti-Muslim policies and India's interference in Bangladeshi politics. Protesters demanded the cancellation of the Bangladesh government's invitation to the Indian Prime Minister. The otherwise peaceful protests turned violent when the protesters were attacked by the supporters of the ruling Awami League party along with a crackdown by the law-enforcement agencies, causing the deaths of several protesters throughout the last week of March 2021 in Bangladesh. Initially launched by progressive student organizations including the Bangladesh Students Union, Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad, and the Socialist Students' Front, the demonstrations were later joined by the Islamic group Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.

It is responsible for inspecting factories in Bangladesh. Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin and Amirul Haque Amin are co-chairman of the organisation. Rubana Huq is an executive committee member of the council.
