Zabrinski were an alternative rock band from Carmarthen and Cardiff, Wales. They formed in the late 1990s and released four albums before splitting up in 2007. [1]

History

Misnamed after the 1970 film Zabriskie Point , the band was formed by school friends Matthew Durbridge (vocals, guitar), Iwan Morgan (electronica/keyboards), and Gareth Richardson (guitar) in Carmarthen. [2] They relocated to Cardiff and took on further members, Rhun Lenny (bass) and Owain Jones (drums), both of the band Topper. [3] [4] Their debut album, Screen Memories was released on their own Microgram label, and led to a deal with Ankst. In March 2001, the band's Ankst debut, Yeti was released, described by the South Wales Echo as "a collection of 10 tracks just bristling with ambition", [4] and the band also recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show. [5] Yeti drew comparisons with such varied artists as New Order, Aphex Twin, and Flaming Lips. [6] The same year, they supported Gorky's Zygotic Mynci on their UK tour, [3] and they also toured several times with Super Furry Animals. [2] They were nominated for three Welsh Music Awards in 2001. [7] The band's third album, Koala Ko-ordination was issued in 2002 now with Kris Jenkins on keyboards, with comparisons again to Flaming Lips, and also to Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. [3] [8] [9] The album was described as "Very strange. Rather marvellous" by the Sunday Times , [10] and "a beguiling album that is both smart and warm" by the Daily Express . [11] The band's last album, Ill Gotten Game was released in 2005, and was described by the BBC as "a many faceted work of wonder", but disappointing sales contributed to the band splitting up in 2007. [1] [12] The band's final performance was at the Gwyl Macs Fest in Carmarthen on 1 September 2007. [2] [13]

In February 2018, the band tweeted that they will be releasing new music later in the year. [14]

The Rough Guide to Wales described Ankst as "one of the most prolific, eclectic and innovative" of the 1990s Welsh music labels.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci were a psychedelic folk and alternative rock band which formed in Carmarthen, Wales, in 1991. The group performed music in both Welsh and English, and they had eight Top 75 singles on the UK Singles Chart during their career. They were prominent during the era known as Cool Cymru. The group disbanded in May 2006.

Alan Holmes is a musician, artist and record producer, based in north Wales. Although he began his musical career in the late 1960s in childhood beat group The Insects, he first came to prominence in The Zuggs, followed by A Silly Tree, the latter including Gary Stubbs, later of Cut Tunes with whom Holmes also served. Holmes was responsible for the cult psychedelic band The Pinecones and by the mid-1980s he was a key member of Reinheitsgebot, Third Spain and The Lungs.

The album was recorded at Stiwdio Ofn in Llanfaelog, Anglesey and mastered by Chris Blair at Abbey Road Studios. The album was the last to feature founder member John Lawrence, who had departed the band by the time the album was released.

Euros Childs is a Welsh musician and songwriter, perhaps best known as the frontman for the band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and—as of January 2019—the keyboardist for Teenage Fanclub. His sister, violinist Megan Childs, was also a member of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, and their father Lynn played on some Gorky's recordings, most notably on Barafundle. Childs was born in Freshwater East, Pembrokeshire, and was educated at the Welsh-medium school Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin in Carmarthenshire.

John Lawrence is a Welsh musician. He was a founding member of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, but left the band in 1999, prior to the release of the band's sixth album Spanish Dance Troupe. As a solo artist, he has sometimes gone by the name Infinity Chimps.

Myrddin, the Welsh name of the legendary figure Merlin, is traditionally associated with the town of Carmarthen, and Bro Myrddin means "Myrddin's country ".
