The event was won by Mamo Wolde of Ethiopia, the nation's third consecutive gold medal in the Olympic marathon.
Ashious Jordan Melu, also known as Ashios, was a Zambian footballer and coach. Melu captained the Zambia national team from 1988 to 1992.
Zambia competed at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, Australia. It was the country's second participation in the Paralympic Games. Wheelchair athlete Lango Sinkamba, who had competed in the 1996 Games, took part for the second time, entering the marathon. Visually impaired sprinter Nancy Kalaba, Zambia's only other representative, made her Paralympic début, in the 100m race. Neither of them won a medal.
Zambia competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its twelfth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its début at the 1964 Summer Olympics. The delegation consisted of seven competitors; three track and field athletes Gerald Phiri, Prince Mumba and Chauzje Choosha, one each in Boxing and Judo and two swimmers, Zane Jordan and Jade Ashleigh Howard. Phiri, Mumba, Choombe and Munyonga had qualified by meeting the standards in their respective sports, and Choosha, Jordan and Howard qualified by wildcard places. Mumba was the national flag bearer at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Gerald Phiri is a Zambian sprinter who participates in 60 metre, 100 metre and 200 metre events in both indoor and outdoor events. He began competing in athletics while in school and continued his career at Texas A&M University. He became the first sprinter to achieve a 100–200 sprint double at the Big 12 Conference event and earned an All-American award. Phiri's international début in the 2009 World Championship in Athletics where he was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100 metres. He won a silver medal in a 60 metres event in his second year at university, and secured three medals at the 2010 Big 12 Conference meet.
Chauness Chauzje Choosha is a Zambian sprinter. She participated in the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships where she established a new Zambian national record in the 60 metres, and was eliminated at the semi-final stage of the 100 metres at the African Championships in Athletics. Choosha qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics via a wildcard and did not qualify for the preliminary round of the 100 metres.
Ahmed Radhi Humaiesh Al-Salehi was an Iraqi footballer who played as a striker. Nicknamed "Al-Saher" in his playing days and regarded as one of Iraq's and Asia's best players of all time, Radhi scored the only Iraqi goal at the FIFA World Cup in its 1986 edition, a low shot to the corner of the net against Belgium in a 2–1 defeat. He was voted the Asian Footballer of the Year in 1988.

Jordan Matthew Wilimovsky is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in open water swimming. At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Wilimovsky won the gold medal in the 10 km open water event. Wilimovsky won by a margin of 12.1 seconds over the second-place finisher Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Wilimovsky competed in both pool swimming and open water swimming events, becoming the first American to swim in both types of events at one Olympic Games.
