Zilanie Tamara Gondwe (born October 1974) is a Malawian journalist, activist, and entrepreneur. She is most known as the founder and CEO of Blackmore Creative Agency, a public relations and event management agency. Through the company, she has spearheaded many popular national events such as Women of Distinction Awards (WODA), CREAM - Woman in the Arts! ,Tedx Lilongwe and Fashion Malawi Edition (FAME)'s fashion shows, which initiated Malawi's first fashion week. A philanthropist, Gondwe is also known for her charitable work impacting artists and women in Malawi. She has also served in the environmental sector the Chairperson of The Lilongwe Society for Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA). [4]

Career

Gondwe started her education in law school in London with an interest in entertainment law but after opening her own lodge, decided to study tourism and hospitality. She earned a diploma in tourism and hospitality in London and interned in the entertainment industry in Europe. She eventually got a job in the entertainment industry in Malawi where she has been influential in the arts and creative sector in Malawi. Gondwe worked as a journalist for the Guardian News a Malawian-based Newspaper in her early career and later became the Editor of that paper. However, she left journalism to pursue a career fulltime in the entertainment, and arts sector through the establishment of Blackmore Creative Agency. [2] [5] [6]

She held office as the chair of the Arterial Network, an organization advancing the arts and culture in the country. [3]

Event and Entertainment Management

She has worked to support and initiate creative projects and artists in Malawi through her company, Blackmore Creative Agency. Notably, she has initiated high-profile projects like FAME fashion Week and has worked in entertainment and tourism as head of media/public relations for events such as the Lake of Stars Festival. She has managed Malawian artists such as Wambali Mkandawire and has worked with other musicians such as Tay Grin, Tiwonge, and Wendy Harawa. She has also worked in media for music festivals in Malawi such as the Lake of Stars Festival. [6]

Gondwe is a feminist and woman's rights activist. She was the producer of Malawi's first production of The Vagina Monologues in 2015 which developed into a cultural adapted version called Chitenje Changa Monologues [7] She has also initiated the African Women Monologues, a stage performance focused on women's issues which was performed in Uganda. Her play, “the Hyenas must be Arrested” was also performed which was a political play, focused on harmful cultural practices affecting women. [8] [9]

Environmental Activism

Gondwe is the co-founder and Director of the Institute of the Conservation of Nature. She previously worked as the Chairperson of UN Women funded domestic animal welfare start-up, LSPCA, Lilongwe Society for Prevention Against Cruelty to Animals. [10] [11]

Personal

Gondwe was born in Zomba to Political Science and Economics professor, Dr Chifipa Gondwe and school teacher, Mazoe Gondwe. Gondwe has lived in Kenya and Zambia, Malawi and the U.K. In Malawi, she attended St. Andrew's in Malawi in Blantyre. She has a daughter and was married to musician Sally Nyundo who she was separated with in 2016. She is the grand niece to Rose Chibambo. [12] [2] [10]

Mary Shawa is a Malawian former public official. From 2004 through 2012, she was the Principal Secretary for Nutrition, HIV and AIDS in the Ministry of Health and Population, and then she was the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disabilities and Social Welfare before her retirement from civil service in 2018.

Vitus-Gregory Gondwe is a Malawian journalist, editor and media consultant. He also runs his own social, music and business analysis blog. He is known for his investigative stories. He also writes on business news. He has been a contributor to several newspapers in Malawi, and has worked for the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation as correspondent. Walije Gondwe is a writer who was the first Malawian woman novelist to have her work published. Most of her books are young adult fiction published in the 1980s and 1990s. She now runs an educational charity, Vinjeru.

ZaniMichelle Chiumia is a Malawian artist, actress, model and former TV presenter. She gained international recognition in music when she collaborated with a Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter, Patoranking, on a song called "Single Tonight" released in 2016.

Tiwonge Munthali is a Malawian model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Malawi 2018. She took over Cecilia Khofi, former Miss Malawi 2017. Mwabi Mfune and Ngugi Buleya were first and second runner ups.

Simama Hotel is a hotel located in Lilongwe, Malawi. It is the country's biggest and most notable hotel after the Sun Bird chain of hotels. The hotel provides facilities and services for the local and middle class business, as well as leisure travelers. The hotel was launched by the Minister of Information, Civic Education and Tourism, Jappie Mhango. The building cost up to MK3.6.

Mizaya Princess Chitsulo, best known as Princess Chitsulo, is a Malawian gospel singer, activist and businesswoman. In 2001, she was honored an award for Best Female Vocalist in the Malawi Gin Competition. In 2014, she also got awarded as best female artist and her song titled Ndidzayimba Nyimbo was voted as the best song of the year.

Angel Mbekeani, best known as Sangie, is a Malawian reggae artist and songwriter. In 2015, she won as the best female artist of the year in UMP Awards. In 2016 and 2019, she was nominated in the same awards in Best Female Artist of the Year. In 2017, she won in the same awards in Best Female Act.

Southeast African nation of Malawi has a complicated criminal history that is a reflection of its political, economic, and cultural environment. Although crime in Malawi dates back to pre-colonial times, it wasn't until the colonial era that it started to pose a serious threat.
