Victor Gurrola Jr., better known by his stage name Zilla (formerly VG Skillz and V-Zilla), is an American underground rapper and producer from Houston, Texas. He is known for his style of rap, which combines East Coast hip hop with his native Southern hip hop. In 2010, Zilla became a member of hip hop supergroup Army of the Pharaohs, founded by Jedi Mind Tricks frontman Vinnie Paz.

Coming out of Houston, Zilla got his start posting music online. He was discovered by Swedish producer Moonshine, leading to his successful 2001 debut album E.X.H.A.L.E. The album Lockdown Sessions followed in 2004, and three years later he joined forces with Houston locals S.W.A.T. Music Project, changing his style to the more traditional Southern hip hop style with his collaboration album Empty Bottles and Full Ashtrays in 2008. [1]

Returning to his more lyrical, East Coast-influenced roots, he mounted a comeback with 2011's Interview with a Monster, letting it be known that his previous style was a "gross miscalculation" and that he was going to make music the way he feels and marks an official return. [2] Zilla made his first appearance with Army of the Pharaohs on their fourth studio album, In Death Reborn , released in 2014. [3]

Career

Early career (1997–1999)

Victor Gurrola Jr. started rapping with his initials VG Skillz. He used to participate in numerous rap battles in his hometown of Houston, Texas. He stated that Houston was the city with which he had a love-hate relationship, as many people from Houston did not recognize him and showed him hate for his unique style of rapping. [4]

W.I.S.D.O.M. and E.X.H.A.L.E. (2000–2002)

In 2002, VG Skillz followed up his 2000 debut album W.I.S.D.O.M. with E.X.H.A.L.E. Although W.I.S.D.O.M. was VG Skillz' first album, E.X.H.A.L.E. is considered to be his debut solo album. It was over the Internet that VG Skillz hooked up with the Swedish group The Narcs (now known as The Narcissists). Checking out each other's tracks online led to VG Skillz appearing on their debut, "Temporarily Forever". In return, Narcs producer Moonshine offered to furnish some beats for VG Skillz second joint. They ended up with a total of 11 tracks, with VG Skillz recording his vocals in Houston and Moonshine mixing and mastering the tracks in Stockholm, Sweden. [5] The track "Lethal" contained a guest appearance from Ebomb. [6]

The album was recognized as an "intercontinental collaboration that definitely makes sense".[ citation needed ] It samples tracks from Excaliber's gloomy "Realize" to Surgeon General's physical "Hot Rhymes". Somewhere on "E.X.H.A.L.E.", VG Skillz says that he would "never ever sacrifice substance for the flow." The self-described "Blue Collared MC" gained recognition for his flow.[ citation needed ] It was released via Ill Dyalect Records. [7]

Lockdown sessions (2003–2005)

In 2003, VG Skillz changed his name to V-Zilla. V-Zilla describes himself "as the underdog". [8] After two albums under the name VG Skillz and two years of opening for or performing with underground acts like Atmosphere and Jedi Mind Tricks, V-Zilla would eventually get his own time in the underground spotlight. He released his third album, The Lockdown Sessions; though the album's intro is somewhat clichéd (V-Zilla is sentenced to life in prison for "attempted musical murder"). [9]

I'm not a follower, I wanna be state-of-the-art"

In 2004, V-Zilla collaborated with Swedish producer Astma on his compilation album Astma Presents on the track "I'm Back". [10] V-Zilla was also credited on the track "Soul" by underground rapper Bucc from The Narcissist; the single was later featured on the EP The Soul EP and the album Independent Perfekshun. [11] V-Zilla was also featured on the song "Remain Cautious" by K-Otix on the album Ethos. [12]

Empty Bottles and Full Ashtray (2006–2008)

Several years later, V-Zilla joined forces with Houston locals S.W.A.T.'s (South West Alief Texas) [13] music project, switching his style to the more traditional Southern hip hop style of music with a collaborative album titled Empty Bottles and Full Ashtrays in 2008. What Houston blog press said about this part of V-Zilla's career is that "When his city finally knew him, the world took notice because he was spitting the worst rap of his career. He'll tell you himself the reason he wants to be alone is because what went wrong in his career would've gone right, if he did it on his own." [1] V-Zilla himself said that this set himself four years back as a "backup singer in Rob G's boy band." [4]

Interview with a Monster, name change and joining Army of the Pharaohs (2009–2013)

Returning to his more lyrical, East Coast-influenced roots, V-Zilla mounts a comeback with Interview with a Monster, letting it be known that his previous style was a "gross miscalculation" and that he is going to make music the way he feels, and marks an official return. Many of the tracks on this album were self-produced; the album release comes with the tracks "Most Incredible", "The Rain" and "Duck Down" with Reef the Lost Cauze, and "Flatline" featuring Vinnie Paz and Blacastan.

Paz asked V-Zilla to join Army of the Pharaohs in 2011, but it wasn't official until 2012 when it was announced he and Connecticut's Blacastan were added to the group. On 4 January 2013, V-Zilla released an EP titled The A.D.D.I.C.T. It contained self-produced tracks and production from Swedish producer and long time friend Moonshine.

In late 2013, V-Zilla changed his name to a more simplified Zilla; he first showed off his name performing with Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon. [14]

In Death Reborn and Martyr Musick (2014–present)

On 8 April 2014, in an interview with The Underground Vault, Zilla announced he was working on his fourth studio album titled Martyr Musick. The album was initially set to be released sometime June 2014, but as of September 2014, it still hasn not been released. [15]

Donnie Shaquan Lewis, also known as Skillz, or Mad Skillz is an American rapper known for his acclaimed 1996 album From Where???, a reference to his origins in Virginia, not a New York City or Los Angeles rapper. He is also known for his yearly "Rap Ups," which he has done annually since 2002.

Army of the Pharaohs

Army of the Pharaohs is an American underground hip hop collective originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed by Jedi Mind Tricks founder Vinnie Paz in 1998. The collective has strong links to other underground east coast groups such as Outerspace, Snowgoons, La Coka Nostra, Demigodz, 7L & Esoteric, and JuJu Mob. AOTP's affiliations and member roster has changed several times since its formation.

OuterSpace

OuterSpace is an underground hip hop duo from North Philadelphia. Originally a trio consisting of three Puerto Rican friends that then took the artist names Planetary, Jedeye and Crypt the Warchild. The founding member Mario Collazo (Planetary) was then attending 10th grade, while the other two, Richard Cruz (Jedeye) and Marcus Albaladejo, were in 8th grade.

Chad Bromley, better known by his stage name Apathy, is a rapper and producer from Willimantic, Connecticut.

Vinnie Paz

Vincenzo Luvineri, better known as Vinnie Paz, is a Sicilian American rapper and the lyricist behind the Philadelphia underground hip hop group Jedi Mind Tricks. He is also the frontman of the hip hop collective Army of the Pharaohs.

Crypt the Warchild

Marcus Albaladejo, better known by his stage name Crypt the Warchild, is an underground rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Albaladejo is one half of the rap duo OuterSpace and is a member of Army of the Pharaohs. Crypt the Warchild is the older brother of rapper King Syze, who is also a member of Army of the Pharaohs.

King Syze

David Albaladejo is an underground rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of Puerto Rican descent. He is a member of underground hip hop supergroup; Army of the Pharaohs, having featured on all their studio albums. He is known for his frequent collaboration with AOTP members; OuterSpace. Outside of rap, Albaladejo works as a member of trade union which has inspired the names of many of his studio albums.

Sharif T. Lacey, better known by his stage name Reef the Lost Cauze, is an underground hip hop artist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cauze became well known on the underground circuit towards the late 1990s and more so in the early 2000s, making his mark by winning many battle competitions within New York and interstate and displaying rare skills of what many called true MCing.

Planetary (rapper)

Mario Collazo, better known by his stage name Planetary, is an American underground rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is one half of the rap duo OuterSpace and a member of Army of the Pharaohs.

Rafiek George is an underground hip hop rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He gives much of the credit for his success to his mother, who worked hard to raise 5 other family members. After graduating he went out to get a recording contract. Supporting himself as a public speaker, youth counselor, and taking parts in talent shows, Journalist eventually earned himself his first paycheck after triumphing in a talent search held at New Jersey's Stardust ballroom two years after graduating.

Kenneth Greene, better known by his stage name Doap Nixon, is an American hip hop artist and rapper who is a former member of supergroup Army of the Pharaohs. He has collaborated with a variety of underground hip hop artists and released his debut full solo album, Sour Diesel in 2008.

Celph Titled

Victor Mercer, better known by his stage name Celph Titled, is an American rapper and record producer who is a member of the hip hop supergroup Army of the Pharaohs, as well as the Demigodz along with Connecticut rapper Apathy, Ryu from Get Busy Committee, and rapper Blacastan and Esoteric.

<i>In Death Reborn</i> 2014 studio album by Army of the Pharaohs

In Death Reborn is the fourth studio album by the underground hip hop collective Army of the Pharaohs. The album was released on April 22, 2014, via Vinnie Paz's independent record label, Enemy Soil. The album features members Vinnie Paz, Apathy, Blacastan, Block McCloud, Celph Titled, Crypt The Warchild, Demoz, Des Devious, Doap Nixon, Esoteric, King Magnetic, King Syze, Planetary, Reef the Lost Cauze and Zilla, with a guest appearance by Lawrence Arnell. The only member who did not appear on the album was Jus Allah, also affiliated with Jedi Mind Tricks; it was later confirmed that Allah had left both groups.

Demigodz

Demigodz are a hip hop collective founded by Connecticut rappers Open Mic and Reflex. The group was originally named "The Nobility" but Open Mic renamed the group "The Demigodz" with inspiration from one of his own verses. The group has changed several times through the years. As of 2012, the group consists of; Apathy, Celph Titled, Ryu, Esoteric, Motive, & Blacastan.

<i>Collective Bargaining</i> (album) 2011 studio album by King Syze

Collective Bargaining is the third studio album by underground rapper and Army of the Pharaohs member King Syze. It was entirely produced by Skammadix. An Extended Play version was released on to iTunes on 13 August 2013.

Lawrence Arnell

Lawrence Arnell is an American rapper and producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He first collaborated with hip hop group Jedi Mind Tricks on Violent by Design under the name Diamondback in 2000. In 2014, Arnell joined Army of the Pharaohs and appeared on their studio albums In Death Reborn and Heavy Lies the Crown.
