This marked the country's fourth entry in the Olympics, since its debut in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The country's delegation consisted of three competitors, competing in two disciplines: they were athletics competitors Naiel Santiago D'Almeida and Celma Bonfim da Graça, and canoeist Alcino Silva. None of the competitors made it to their event final, though Silva did advance to the semi-finals.

Three years later, at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Bridgitte again won the bronze medal, this time in the K-1 500m event. In August 2014, she replicated her Olympic form, and at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Moscow she picked up a third career bronze model in international competition. Hartley became the first person from both South Africa and the African continent to medal at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. Hartley also competed in the K-2 500 m event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but was eliminated in the semifinals.
Tina Dietze is a German sprint canoer who has competed since the late 2000s. She won the gold medal in K-2 and the silver medal in K-4 at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Dame Lisa Marie Carrington is a flatwater canoeist and New Zealand's most successful Olympian, having won a total of five gold medals and one bronze medal. She won three consecutive gold medals in the Women's K‑1 200 metres at the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2016 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Olympics, as well as gold in the same event at the 2011 Canoe Sprint World Championships. Marharyta Ryhorauna Makhneva, née Tsishkevich, Belarusian: Маргарыта Рыгораўна Махнева (Цішкевіч); Łacinka: Marharyta Ryhoraŭna Machnieva (Ciškievič); born 13 February 1992) is a Belarusian sprint canoeist. She won two gold medals at the 2015 World Championships and the bronze medal in Women's K-4 500 metres at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She won a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's K-4 500 metres.
Zhou Yu is a Chinese sprint canoeist. She won gold and silver medal in the women's kayak singles at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Zhou is also a member of Hunan Sports Club, there she is coached and trained by Wu Yubiao.
Ren Wenjun is a Chinese sprint canoeist. She won a gold medal, as a member of the Chinese women's kayak four team, at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, with a time of 1:34.440. This was despite 2010 being the year Ren made her international debut.
Asumi Ōmura is a Japanese sprint canoeist, born in Shizuoka Prefecture. She won silver and bronze medal in the women's kayak doubles and four at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, respectively. Ōmura is also a member of the canoe and kayak team at Waseda University in Shinjuku, and is coached and trained by Octavian Ispas of Romania.
Caitlin Regal is a New Zealand canoeist. On 3 August 2021 she won a gold medal alongside Lisa Carrington in the K-2 500 metres event.
Jordan Wood is an Australian canoeist. He competed in the men's K-2 200 metres and men's K-4 1000 metres events at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Denis Myšák is a Slovak sprint canoeist. He competes in K-4 events and won a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Alyssa Bull is an Australian canoeist. She qualified to represent Australia at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Bull was unable to make the final of the women's K-1 500m being knocked out in the semi-final. Bull paired with Alyce Wood in the Women's K-2 500m. They made it to the final and finished fifth.

She competed in the women's K-2 500 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics and in the women's K2 500 metres and women's K1 500 metres at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In 2017 she won her maiden World Championship title in the K1 1000m. She has also won a string of World Cup medals. In the Under 23 Category she won two Bronze Medals at the World Championships.

Sabrina Inés Ameghino is an Argentine sprint canoeist. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the women's K-1 200 metres race, in which she reached the semifinals, and as part of the 13th-place Argentina team in the women's K-4 500 metres race.
