Zurqa is a village in Gezira State, Sudan. It is located 10 km east of Tambul.
The RSF killed at least eight people in Zurqa during the October 2024 eastern Gezira State massacres. [1] [2]
Gezira, also spelt Al Jazirah, Al Jazeera and Al Jazira, is one of the 18 states of Sudan. The state lies between the Blue Nile and the White Nile in the east-central region of the country. The state has a population of 5,096,920 as of 2018, and an area of 27,549 km2.
Wad Madani, Wad Medani or Madani is the capital of the Al Jazirah state in east-central Sudan. Wad Madani lies on the west bank of the Blue Nile, nearly 85 miles (136 km) southeast of Khartoum. It is linked by rail to Khartoum and is the center of a cotton-growing region. The city is also the center of local trade in wheat, peanuts, barley, and livestock. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army is a Sudanese rebel group active in Darfur, Sudan. It was founded as the Darfur Liberation Front by members of three indigenous ethnic groups in Darfur: the Fur, the Zaghawa, and the Masalit, among whom were the leaders Abdul Wahid al-Nur of the Fur and Minni Minnawi of the Zaghawa.

A civil war between two major rival factions of the military government of Sudan, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies under the Janjaweed leader Hemedti, began during Ramadan on 15 April 2023. Three minor (neutral) factions have participated in the fighting: Darfur Joint Protection Force, SLM (al-Nur) under Abdul Wahid al-Nur, and SPLM-N under Abdelaziz al-Hilu. Fighting has been concentrated around the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region. As of 8 September 2024, at least 20,000 people had been killed and 33,000 others were injured. As of 5 July 2024, over 7.7 million were internally displaced and more than 2.1 million others had fled the country as refugees, and many civilians in Darfur have been reported dead as part of the Masalit massacres.

The Battle of Wad Madani was a battle in the Sudanese civil war over the control of Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira State in east-central Sudan, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The battle ended in an RSF victory on 19 December 2023.

The Wad Al-Noora massacre started at around 05:00 (GMT+2) on 5 June 2024, when the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the village of Wad Al-Noora in Al-Jazira state twice, killing at least 100 civilians. The massacre followed after the RSF sieged and opened fire on the village.
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has waged a major offensive against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Sennar State, resulting in widespread violence and displacement, as part of the ongoing Sudanese civil war.
A series of air strikes are being conducted by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against positions of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across Sudan, resulting in a significant increase in the number of civilian deaths in the war. Civilian areas and RSF-held positions have been targeted by the SAF in North Darfur, North Kordofan, Gezira State, and White Nile State, resulting in an estimated death toll of 523 Sudanese civilians.
On 21 October 2024, a cargo Ilyushin Il-76 that had previously been operated by New Way Cargo Airlines was shot down over the Darfur region of western Sudan by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during the Sudanese civil war. All five people aboard were killed. The ownership of the aircraft remains unclear. The aircraft is believed to have been operated by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on a mission to deliver equipment and medicine to the army-held city of Al-Fashir. Despite this, initial reporting stated that the aircraft involved was an Ilyushin Il-76 registered as EX-76011 with serial number 0013428831 operated by New Way Cargo Airlines on behalf of the United Arab Emirates supplying the RSF. However, the aircraft was reportedly exported to Sudan on 12 January 2024 where it was registered ST-JAN; the initial report that it was EX-76011 was on account of a safety card bearing this registration being found in the wreckage.
The 2024 eastern Gezira State massacres refers to the ongoing retaliatory mass killing of civilians in at least thirty Sudanese villages in Gezira State by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) starting on 20 October 2024, which killed at least 300 people and wounded at least 200 more. Impacted settlements, including al-Sireha, Safita al-Ghunomab, Zurqa, Deim Elias, Tambul, and Saqiaah, also suffered from systemic sexual violence, widespread looting and arson of properties, and destruction of healthcare facilities, displacing thousands of villagers.
