Earl of Desmond

The title of Earl of Desmond has been held historically by Lords in Ireland, first as a title outside of the peerage system and later as part of the Peerage of Ireland.

FitzGerald dynasty Cambro-Norman, later Hiberno-Norman dynasty, holding power in Ireland over centuries

The FitzGerald/FitzMaurice Dynasty is a Cambro-Norman, Anglo-Norman and later Hiberno-Norman aristocratic dynasty.. They have been peers of Ireland since at least the 13th century, and are described in the Annals of the Four Masters as having become "more Irish than the Irish themselves" or Gaels, due to assimilation with the native Gaelic aristocratic and popular culture. The dynasty has also been referred to as the Geraldines. They achieved power through the conquest of large swathes of Irish territory by the sons and grandsons of Gerald of Windsor. Gerald of Windsor was a Norman castellan in Wales, and he is the male progenitor of the FitzMaurice and FitzGerald Dynasty.

Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond 16th and 17th-century Irish Earl

Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond and 3rd Earl of OssoryPC (Ire), was an influential courtier in London at the court of Elizabeth I. He was Lord Treasurer of Ireland from 1559 to his death. He fought for the crown in the Rough Wooing, the Desmond Rebellions, and Tyrone's Rebellion.

Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond 16th-century Irish earl

Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond, also counted as the 15th or 16th, owned large part of the Irish province of Munster. In 1565 he fought the private Battle of Affane against his neighbours, the Butlers. After this he was for some time a prisoner in the Tower of London. The First Desmond Rebellion took place during his absence. He was the leader of the Second Desmond Rebellion from 1579 to his death and was therefore called the Rebel Earl. He was attainted in 1582 and went into hiding but was hunted down and killed.

Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Llanstephan

Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Maynooth, Naas, and Llanstephan (born: almost certainly not at Windsor Castle, more likely Carew in Wales c.1105 – September c.1176 Wexford, Ireland. He was a medieval Anglo-Norman baron and a major figure in the Norman Invasion of Ireland.

Thomas Fitzmaurice FitzGerald, 2nd Baron of Desmond, was the son of Maurice FitzJohn FitzGerald and grandson of John FitzThomas FitzGerald from whom he inherited the title.
