Elections to the seventh Odisha Legislative Assembly were held 1977. [1]
The elections were held for 147 seats. A total of 604 candidates contested for these 147 seats. [2]
In 1974, Utkal Congress merged into Bharatiya Lok Dal to form Odisha Janata Party. Odisha Janata Party includes Indian National Congress (O) – where "O" stood for "Organisation" or "Old", Samyukta Socialist Party and the Bharatiya Jana Sangh had formed a coalition called the "Grand Alliance" to oppose Indira Gandhi and the Congress (R) and the alliance was named as Janata Party.
Three national parties, Communist Party of India, Indian National Congress, and Janata Party took part in the assembly election.
The Janata Party emerged again as the winner by winning 78% of the seats with a vote share of 49%. Nilamani Routray become the Chief Minister of the state.

The politics of Odisha are part of India's federal parliamentary representative democracy, where the union government exercises sovereign rights. Certain powers are reserved to the states, including Odisha. The state has a multi-party system, in which the two main parties are the nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the regional, socialist Biju Janata Dal (BJD). The Indian National Congress (INC) has also significant presence.
The National People's Party is a national-level political party in India, though its influence is mostly concentrated in the state of Meghalaya. The party was founded by P. A. Sangma after his expulsion from the NCP in July 2012. It was accorded national party status on 7 June 2019. It is the first political party from Northeastern India to have attained this status.
