Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka state in southern India. Following the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies in 2008, the constituency was renamed.
Mapanna Mallikarjun Kharge is an Indian politician, who is the current president of the Indian National Congress since 2022, and Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Karnataka since 2020. He is currently serving as Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha since 17 December 2022. He was also Leader of Indian National Congress, Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019 and chairperson of Public Accounts Committee (India) from 2016 to 2019. He was formerly the Minister of Railways from 2013 to 2014 and Minister of Labour and Employment from 2009 to 2013 in the Government of India. Kharge was a Member of Parliament for Gulbarga, Karnataka from 2009 to 2019. He was also general secretary of All India Congress Committee and incharge for Maharashtra from 2018 to 2020.
Udupi Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka a state in southern India. This constituency was created as part of the implementation of the delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies in 2008, based on the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India constituted in 2002. It first held elections in 2009 and its first member of parliament was D. V. Sadananda Gowda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gowda was selected on 4 August 2011 to become Chief Minister (CM) of Karnataka after the previous CM B. S. Yeddyurappa resigned. He therefore had to resign as MP for this seat which forced a by-election in 2012. This by-election was won by K. Jayaprakash Hegde of the Indian National Congress (INC). As of the latest elections in 2019, Shobha Karandlaje of the BJP represents this constituency.
The 2004 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election took place on 20 April and 26 April 2004 in 224 constituencies in Karnataka, India. The elections were conducted to elect the government in the state of Karnataka for the next five years. The votes were counted on 13 May 2004. None of the parties were able to win a majority and the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest party with 79 seats. Subsequently, the Indian National Congress with 65 members and Janata Dal (Secular) with 58 members formed a coalition to run the government with Dharam Singh as the chief minister. This was the first ever coalition government in the state.
